Time Off Makes One Happy

In today’s society, many are caught up with their commitments such as school, work and families. Especially in a fast paced country like Singapore, the situation is so bad that surveys have shown its citizens being the most emotionless consumers, and a huge percentage of them are not happy with their current lifestyles. While the country is well known for its outstanding GDP performance, efficient workers, and stable economic environment, what good is all these when its citizens are unable to fully enjoy the fruits of their own labor?

How then can one improve on such situations? It is crucial that one takes time off from work and all other commitments, and just focus on oneself. Only then can they relax, take a break from the outside world, and recharge in preparation for the next challenge that will come their way. But for people who are so used to having other commitments as the center of their worlds, how then should they go about incorporating such changes?

What one needs to consider first, is what their passions are. If it is music, then set aside time to play an instrument if that is your thing, or just drown yourself in tunes and escape from reality for a short while. If handicrafts is something that you like, then come up with a project and set out to complete it. That sense of satisfaction with the completed product is definitely something good for your soul. Besides indulging in your hobbies, consider doing some sports to boost your moods. Other than the obvious benefits from working out, such as improved overall health and physical appearance (which may therefore increase one’s self-confidence and result in a positive well-being), It has also been scientifically proven that regular exercise can be as effective as antidepressants in reducing depressive symptoms.

There are many options for one to choose from when deciding what types of workout to participate in. Yoga and Pilates are well known for being a relaxing form of exercise, whereby the stretching and breathing exercises helps to iron out our physical and mental tensions. Commonly conducted as a group exercise, it could also be a great place to meet new people and broaden your social circle! If you prefer doing cardio, or lifting weights, then consider joining a gym. There are several types of gyms to suit your preferences, be it a circuit-training only gym, women-only gym, or group exercises only gym. If you do not want to spend the additional cost for membership fees, then head outdoors for a jog, or make use of the exercise facilities in the parks. Singapore’s government has paid special attention to include an exercise area in each neighborhood for the benefit of the residents.

It is important for everyone to take time off to refocus on themselves, before heading back in to their commitments to ensure personal well-being. Only then can a nation have  an efficient, sustainable, and satisfied workforce as well as happy citizens.
