The Secret of the Forgotten Laws of Attraction

February 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

A few years back, before much was really known about "The 11 Forgotten Laws", I was introduced to "The Secret". I have to admit that it didn't really have much effect on me at first. Even now, if I see the book in a store somewhere I'm disappointed by the way its cover presents like the missing volume of "The Lord of the Rings"! In the first instance I was given a copy on a DVD that I watched hungrily to see what all the fuss was about. The couple that gave me the film were in the process of creating a successful property empire and seemed to be realizing their vision. I was curious to see why they placed so much value on this film.

The film is full of examples of how the law of attraction has been used to affect positive change in the lives of the people who use it. I remember being particularly impressed by the account of this guy who'd cut a picture of his dream home from a magazine and pasted it onto a board. The theory goes that this process focuses your mind on what you want to attract into your life. In this example it turned out that he ended up living in the actual house he'd clipped from a magazine! This was impressive stuff and it all appeared so easy to use. Think this, imagine that, ponder whatever and the Universe will respond.

But what if you dwell on less savory thoughts like the people who check their car twice or just run back into the apartment to ensure the gas is off? Well guess what? They're inviting those negative intentions into their lives too! This really made me sit up and take notice. In fact I felt quite uncomfortable about the whole idea that by double-checking something you could be setting the wheels in motion for a hell of a messed up day. How far does this go? Is the pilot of an airliner inviting catastrophe into his schedule by going through the pre-flight checklist? Are you sentencing your child to corrosive acid burns by reading the hazardous warning on the side of a household cleaning agent?

At the time I was, and still am, very interested in reading one of Chopra's books, "Synchrodestiny: Harnessing The Infinite Power of Coincidence to Create Miracles". This more or less says similar things. The big difference is that Chopra explains the power of the Universe as a positive force. Bad things happen, of course, but the Universe won't conspire to make them happen to you. The intention of the Universe is about your potential and your creativity. It's up to you take notice of the coincidences and opportunities that appear in your life and to act on them. Bad things are more likely to happen through ignoring the signs or not paying attention to your unfolding life. You may find a cheap cut of meat on the bargain shelf at the mall and think the Universe is giving you a sign but if you don't pay attention to the expiry date being several days before and the god awful stink when you take the wrapper off, then you'll probably get sick from food poisoning!

Chopra's book is an outstanding introduction to the subject in slightly more depth. That's not to say, however, that either should be dismissed as a dumbed down versions of these principles. The truth is that there is an even more comprehensive version of this concept.

Bob Proctor, who features in "The Secret" and has studied its principles and ideas since the 60s, developed a program revealing 11 more laws. This addresses the omissions in the original issue. In general the principle of attraction remains intact. The extra laws, he claims, will transform your life and the way you lead it. As well as giving advice on how to work with them he outlines them:

• The Law of Thinking • The Law of Supply • The Law of Attraction • The Law of Receiving • The Law of Increase • The Law of Compensation • The Law of Non-Resistance • The Law of Forgiveness • The Law of Sacrifice • The Law of Obedience • The Law of Success

There are similarities between these laws and Chopra's principles set out in "Synchrodestiny", most notably the laws of attraction, non-resistance and forgiveness. There are echoes of Buddhism in these laws and if you try to practice only the last two, non-resistance and forgiveness, then you'll be well on the way to following a spiritual path and achieving a quieter mind.

There will be skeptics who will dismiss this whole subject as new age mumbo jumbo. In a world where nervousness and anxiety are all too prevalent, however, and where people are using cognitive therapy and neuro-linguistic programing to overcome psychological obstacles, there's a place for programs that help you focus on the positive to achieve the things you want in life. In fact, in most cases all that's missing is the focus of a plan. Tony Robbins was once asked in an interview why so many people he teaches don't achieve the goals they set out in his seminars. His response was logical and simple: it's about standards. As with any of these programs you can read them until the end of time but if you don't hold yourself to your standards, in other words if you don't act on the information consistently then you're unlikely to see results. "The 11 Forgotten Laws" provides the structure to create an action plan and the tools to focus on it.

I'm interested in all things spiritual and motivational. So when I came across The 11 Forgotten Laws I was keen to see how it could alter my perception of The Secret. I wrote more about it at I have seen many programs about self-improvement, and I've dabbled in Vision Boards, but this really seems to offer comprehensive advice about achieving abundance in your life (see Along with the classic Deepak Chopra text quoted above, with Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now and with classic texts such as Norman Vincent Peale's The Power of Positive Thinking, Bob Proctor's The 11 Forgotten Laws is certainly deserving of a place on the "e" bookshelf!
