Losing Weight and Keeping It Off: 10 Steps to Help You Maintain Long-Term Commitment

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 135

A friend of mine, Robert Wimer, coined the following terms: Trackers, Tweakers and Trekkers, and I loved the concept. He noted that some people don't need much help, if you simply show them what needs to be done and how to track their choices better; they can successful navigate change on their own. These are the "Trackers," and their issue is not previously paying attention to the details of healthier behaviors. It is more of an oversight, than a deep-rooted mental shift issue.

Then there are the "Tweakers," they only need some basic guidance to tweak their current habits and make them more purposeful, consistent, and healthful. They will shape up fairly quickly when they tweak their current habits and make a few simple swaps. This group responds well to challenges, groups, and having accountability to keep them focused and on track.

The last group is the most challenging...they are the "Trekkers." Plain guidance and tracking will not cut it. Their needs are deeper, more set in.How do you know if you are a trekker? Well, if you have ever found yourself bouncing from diet to diet with little to no success, if you struggle with your weight and making good choices, despite knowing what you should do, or if you have all but given up on reaching your wellness goals, you are likely a trekker.

Discovering and understanding the mental aspect of wellness can put trekkers on the right course for the first time. Gaining personal clarity, and clearly defining it, can help trekkers uncover what has held them back and give them the tools to overcome what they find. For trekkers, success is an inside job. Start with the mental game and apply that to the physical components of health and wellness. This combination is essential to long-term adherence to behavior change.

The following steps will help you discover your personal motivators and bring forth strategies that you can use in your trek for personal wellness. They can help you stay on track for the long run.

  1. Set your attitude concerning health, fitness and purpose. Define your intention, visualize your desired identity, and write down your goals.
  2. Write out a list of What Matters Most" to you and be specific. Use this list to create a personal vision statement. One that defines your driving purpose and establishes what you want to accomplish with your life.
  3. Commit to spend your time in a way that reflects what is important to you. To ensure this, you will need to regularly evaluate your schedule. This ensures that you stay in alignment with what matters most to you.
  4. Commit to value and protect your personal time. Say no to extra obligations that do not line up with the things that matter most to you.
  5. Know your goal! Be clear WHY it is important to you to reach your goals. Know what you hope to gain from making any behavioral changes needed to reach that goal.
  6. Make a commitment to consistent moderation in the areas of food intake, activity, and personal relaxation time.
  7. Ensure that your thinking supports your goals and moves you closer to your personal vision, not further away from it.
  8. Stop negative thoughts when you become aware of them and then shift those thoughts into a positive frame.
  9. Be mindful of your internal dialogue. Write down common reframed thoughts and post them where you can see them regularly. Keep your awareness on what you want to achieve, not what you are trying to avoid.
  10. Regularly review your written, goals, vision, and plan to achieve it, so that you can remain focused on your priorities and why you are making the choices in your plan.
