April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

Parents often wonder when the right time for stopping ADHD behavior medication is. This question has become more common during the past few months because of the shortages of the most common ADHD medications, Ritalin and Adderall.

At other times parents start to become concerned about the growth and weight issues that sometimes occur as a side effect of long-term use of many ADHD medications. Additionally, as children enter their teen years they become more self-conscious about taking medication on a regular basis, especially when they have to take it at school.

When Does ADHD Stop?

ADHD is actually a diagnosis that covers a spectrum of behaviors, including difficulty focusing and maintaining attention, fidgeting, difficulty thinking before acting on impulses, and problems with organizing.

Along with a variety of behaviors, the causes of ADHD behavior vary. When a person with ADHD has a neurochemical basis for the disorder, the answer to the question "When does ADHD stop?" is that is does not stop; the person is likely to need to treat the disease for a lifetime.

When ADHD is the result of immaturity in the development of the brain and nervous system, it is possible the answer to the question "When does ADHD stop?" is usually in the teen years when the nervous system goes through a period of rapid growth.

In other cases, people who have ADHD simply have not learned the skills to maintain attention and manage impulsive behavior. They find once they have learned these skills, stopping ADHD behavior medication is an option.

Signs It Might Be the Right Time for Stopping ADHD Behavior Medication

According to the American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry, the following are some signs indicating it might be time to decrease or stop giving a child ADHD medication:

  • No ADHD symptoms for at least a year while taking the medication
  • The amount of medication of ADHD to manage symptoms has remained stable despite an increase in weight
  • The child is able to focus and inhibit impulsive and hyperactive behavior even when they have missed taking their medication
