Side Effects From ADHD Meds: Parents Need to Be Aware of Potential Dangers

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 123

When children start treatment for ADHD, parents need to monitor children for side effects from ADHD meds as well as to see if there is a decrease in ADHD symptoms.

Monitoring is especially important for younger children who might not have the words to express what they experience when they are taking the medication.

Parents are also advised to inform the child's teacher and school officials when the child starts the trial of the medication. In the event a child starts having significant side effects from ADHD medication, the prescribing physician needs to be notified immediately. School nurses can be helpful in this respect.

Common Adverse Reactions from ADHD Meds

The most common class of medication prescribed for ADHD are psycho-stimulants. Drugs in this class include Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, Vyvanse, Metadate, and Dexedrine.

The medications above all differ in their formulations and children vary in the way that their bodies react to the drug. Thus, the extent and the severity of the negative effects will vary, if the child experiences any adverse effects at all. The most common side effects of these medications include the following:

* Decrease in appetite and weight loss

* Sleep disturbances, including insomnia

* Irritability and in extreme cases aggression

* Motor tics

* Headaches

* In children with pre-existing cardiac issues, heart;/ulgt;

Strattera (Atomexetine):

This non-stimulant medication is often prescribed to children who do not respond well to psycho-stimulant medications or have other issues that preclude the use of the stimulant medications. While the initial clinical studies indicated minimal side effects from Strattera, some patients have experienced significant side effects from the use of this medicine. Some of these side effects include:

* Liver problems

* Suicidal ideation

* Psychotic behavioral reactions

Clonidine and Guanfacine:

These medications are typically used to treat high blood pressure, but are sometimes prescribed to treat ADHD symptoms or the side effects from ADHD meds. Additionally, sometimes these drugs are used to manage the aggression some children diagnosed with ADHD exhibit. Some of the side effects associated with these medications include:

* Sleep disturbance, including both drowsiness as well as insomnia

* Dizziness

* Dry mouth

Given the number of side effects associated with ADHD medications as well as the possibility of abuse and addiction with the psycho-stimulant medication, many parents are turning to natural and herbal treatments for ADHD.

Many parents are trying coaching and psychotherapy to develop behavioral and social interventions to help children adapt and manage ADHD symptoms. It is important to note before you stop, modify, or start any ADHD treatment, to check with your child's pediatrician.
