Imagination And Worry - It May Never Happen

April 24, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 190

The earliest cave paintings are thought to be about 40,000 years old. The palaeontologists believe that was the time we humans started to develop tools and weapons.

Now, to say that imagination started at that time is a long stretch, but obviously people were quite capable of imagination then, or they wouldn't have been able to paint.

Used properly, imagination is a wonderful thing. It enables us to invent things, to write, to paint, to daydream about being the boss of a huge company. This is using the imagination properly. Unfortunately, imagination and worry can go hand in hand.

You start to worry about things that may never happen. Then again, worry isn't always a bad thing.

If your mother, who's 80 years old, suddenly decides she's going to climb a mountain, then there's a great need for worry! You'd have visions of her falling off a cliff face onto jagged rocks below and all sorts of terrible things.

Believe it or not, the word 'worry' comes from the old English word 'to strangle'. There's a certain correlation here when you think about it, because unnecessary worrying can 'strangle' healthy, rational thought. This is where our imaginations lead us astray.

For no good reason, we may start to worry about something that is most unlikely to happen. Perhaps there's been a house fire in the next street to your own. This sticks in your mind, most especially when you learn that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault. Imagination and worry really set in then.

While you're at work, your mind is probably distracted from this concern, but as soon as you climb into your car for the drive home, back comes the worry. The fact that your house was completely re-wired by a highly qualified electrician three years ago, doesn't enter into your head.

Imagination not only affects our psychology, but our physiology too. What happens if you think about a luscious piece of cake, all covered in icing? I'll bet your mouth waters!

The problem with linking imagination to worry is that it wastes so much time. If it's positive worrying, like working on a problem or a design and trying to think of the best way of finding a solution, then that's fine. But pointless worrying won't get you anywhere.

So if you find yourself worrying about something, be aware of it. Think it through. Is there really any need to worry? Worrying by itself can't cure a problem, so if indeed a problem exists, how can you solve it?

That's taking your worry down a positive path, and giving your imagination a chance to come up with a positive answer.
