How Your Thinking Affects Your Health

In this article I'm going to explain how your thinking affects your health. Your mind plays a crucial part in your success or failure when trying to change to a healthier way of life which is often overlooked. I will show you the effects negative thoughts have on you physically. Then I'll share how you can start to break the hold these thoughts have over you and your desire to be healthy.

Your mind is a bit like an iceberg. The tip you can see relates to your conscious thinking whilst the vast bulk lying beneath is your subconscious thoughts. If you were literally aware of every thought process you would freeze, just like your computer when it gets overloaded, so your brain does a good job generally of only bringing the most relevant and important things to your attention at any one time.

Your brain is always trying to get you to do what it considers to be in your best interest. In some ways your brain is like a computer in that it is only as good as the programming and information put into it. Over your life through experiences, the things we've read, heard and done and so on you have unwittingly enter false and unhelpful data such as "I must always clear my plate". Unfortunately this faulty programming leads to behaviours that affect your health such as overeating.

The problem is that if your conscious thinking and desire is to eat more healthily, for example, but your subconscious has ingrained thinking such as "Chocolate will make me feel better when I'm upset" or "Salads are tasteless and boring", then your subconscious will sabotage your conscious goal. So you might push yourself to eat a salad for lunch but because this has not satisfied you mentally, you will have to battle an urge to eat the chocolate bar sat in your desk drawer and often lose.

Repetition is the key to establishing your thoughts, good or bad, and is also part of the solution. For example you have reinforced the belief that eating chocolate is what you should do when you feel bad by acting in that way over and over again. So now you need to break that pattern. So you need to consciously challenge that thinking and provide your subconscious with evidence that refutes it. For example, do you really feel better after eating chocolate or do you actually feel worse because you now feel guilty about that too?
