Healthy Natural Help for ADHD and Child Behavior Problems

There are many helpful interventions for ADHD child behavior problems. Drugs are not the only solution. Here are some healthy, natural suggestions.

Behavioral therapy can help you and your child learn coping mechanisms. Many psychologists offer therapy for children and adults with attention deficit disorders.

If your health insurance policy does not cover it, therapy may not be as expensive as you might think. Some therapists have reduced rates based on the parents' income.

Establishing a routine is very important. Books are available that are designed specifically to create a routine that reduces hyperactivity in children.

Programs that involve dietary changes to reduce or eliminate artificial FD&C colors from the child's diet and even from the child's toothpaste are another option. Some of the programs charge membership fees. Others are free.

Nutritional supplements may offer help for ADHD children. A growing amount of scientific evidence indicates that lack of magnesium, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids are involved in the development of the disorders. Several studies have shown that supplementation reduced symptoms.

Setting up a system of rewards and consequences for good and bad behavior is another suggestion. Many therapists teach parents of their patients how to set up a system and offer advice about sticking with the program.

Providing praise and positive reinforcement is something that may be overlooked. Kids with these problems usually get very little praise. You don't have to make a big deal about every little thing your child does right. But you should at least mention the little things. Kids really do thrive on the praise and eventually they can learn what to do to get the positive attention they want.

Support groups for parents are good options. Parents can get advice from other parents. They can talk about their daily frustrations with people who understand what they are going through. One nice thing about a support group is that membership is free.

Regular physical activity can offer help for ADHD children. Martial arts like tae kwon do may be particularly helpful because kids learn to control their movements and are often able to focus their attention better after practicing the art.

This might sound like an unusual bit of advice, but some new studies have shown that spending time in "green" surroundings really helps, whether it is playing in a grassy park or taking a walk through the woods. There is something calming about being in natural surroundings.

As you can see, there is lots of help for ADHD child behavior problems. These are just a few of the options available.
