Dealing With OCD Disorder

How Dealing With OCD Can Be Done

Obsessive thoughts, rituals and routines are all signs of someone having obsessive-compulsive disorder. The thoughts that someone has to deal with are intrusive and will stress them out, which is why OCD is a form of anxiety disorder. A person that suffers from this disorder will think that something bad will happen if they do not perform the actions or rituals that they think about. Some of the most common thoughts people have are about money, hurting someone else or germs. For example, some people have to wash their hands many times per day just because they think about germs being on them. This could be someone washing their hands hundreds of times, not just ten or twenty times.

OCD sufferers think that their thoughts have merit just because they think them repeatedly throughout the day. They also feel they have merit because they feel such a strong connection to something bad happening if they don't perform the ritual that is connected. While most people are able to brush away some of the most inappropriate or dangerous thoughts they have, people with OCD will focus on these all day long. These can easily torment an individual and drive them crazy. Some people are able to hold back while others will perform the actions, which could end up hurting themselves or someone else. Of course everyone who deals with OCD is different, not everyone has the same thoughts.

Dealing with OCD

How a person chooses to deal with OCD is completely up to them. Some individuals choose to try and change their behavior on their own. Although this is difficult, it's a great option for people who cannot afford to go to a therapist. Exposure to the thoughts and rituals is the first thing people will try. This means thinking about the thoughts even when they aren't bothering them and then exposing themselves to the danger. For example, this could mean someone eating food out of order and thinking about what will happen if they do that even when they aren't hungry. Both of these things will help desensitize the brain and show the person that there is no danger from this.

There are a lot of self-help books people can read and use when they want to start dealing with OCD. These teach sufferers the tools they need to overcome this disorder and live their life more normal than they have been. These books teach things like re-evaluating the thoughts, rationalizing them, focusing on other things and changing the way they think. When people learn how to deal with their thoughts and responses, the OCD will become less of a problem in the future. It will take a lot of work in order for this to be effective, but it's worth it.

Medications are also commonly prescribed for some individuals who suffer from OCD. These sometimes are absolutely essential when people can't function and fully accept what they learn with therapy or self-help books. Antidepressants are commonly prescribed because they change the chemistry of the brain. They also help individuals feel better immediately, which isn't the case with therapy. Antidepressants give the person a fighting chance, and help increase the individual's ability of dealing with OCD more effectively.

A lot of people who have OCD are depressed because their life is not able to reach its full potential. When they take the antidepressants they will feel less of the obsessive thoughts and will be able to work on changing themselves as a result of having a clear mind. It's important for people to keep in mind that there are side effects associated with taking these. Each person is different with the way they respond, which is why a doctor needs to prescribe the medication.

Dealing with OCD is something each person will need to do individually. They can choose to do the self-help route, therapy route or medication route. Some people choose to do a combination of these so they can get help more quickly and really change themselves. Having an open mind is going to be one of the most important things anyone has when they are going through treatment. Without wanting to change the way they think, someone isn't going to. When the desire to change is there the possibilities for treatment and recovery are going to be easier to see.
