ADHD Treatment Without Meds - Looking At How A Proper Diet Can Help

February 27, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

Did you know that ADHD treatment without meds is often criticized and even derided? People seem to underestimate the importance of good parenting, a well organised home and above all the food that they give their children to eat. That, in my opinion is a great mistake as a proper diet can help. That is the aim of this article.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has been very critical of the FDA for not taking the research studies on artificial colors more seriously. There does seem to be a definite link between these and hyperactivity and some allergies.

Art least in the USA, the FDA insists that artificial colors are separated form those natural ones on all food labels. This is at least a step in the right direction as Canada, for example, only insists that the vague word 'color ' is used. Avoiding junk foods and snacks with these colorings just makes good sense for maintaining good healthy eating habits, whether your child has ADHD or not.

Does your child have lots of cereal at breakfast? If so, you might like to try and steer him to healthier choices. Cereals contain Sunset yellow (E110) which is linked to hyperactivity, nasal congestion and is problematic for those suffering from asthma.

Does your child have lots of energy drinks and soda pop? Lots of soft drinks contain Tartrazine (E102) which is again linked to hyperactivity, cancer and allergies. If your child has ADHD, it is always a good idea to steer clear of these drinks and encourage them to drink water, if at all possible. This will be just one aspect of your plan for ADHD treatment without meds.

Another diet issue is the fact that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is severely lacking in Omega 3 or DHA which are definitely linked to a brain functioning properly. So, if we have children with ADHD and they have attention problems, memory failures and difficulty in focusing, it just makes sense to feed them with the right brain food.

That is where the Omega 3s come in. One of the clinical dieticians at the University of Maryland Medical Center is in no doubt that these really do help brain function. So, a great way is to ramp up on foods such as:-

* flaxseeds* soybeans* walnuts* sardines* tuna.

Of course ADHD treatment without meds is not as simple as making a few dietary changes. But I am convinced that if we put behavior therapy or simple effective parenting skills at the top of the list, then we can easily start to make progress.

Once we add in diet, exercise and organise the home so that is ADHD friendly then we are well on the way to treating ADHD successfully. The main aim should be to equip the child with managing skills so that he can overcome his minor difficulties at home and at school. As we have seen, a proper diet may not solve the ADHD question, but it can definitely help and there are countless studies which show that link.
