ADHD Drug Problems and Recent Peculiar Supply Shortages

April 14, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 120

Even though millions of prescriptions are written each year for medications to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, parents need to attend to the possibility of ADHD drug problems. With the frequency doctors prescribe ADHD medication to children and teens, it is easy to assume these drugs are relatively safe; however, this is not true for some children and teens. In addition to the potential side effects, ADHD drugs pose the potential for other problems. While children and teens take ADHD medications, parents need to watch for potential ADHD drug problems.

The most common medications prescribed for ADHD are the psycho-stimulants, which include Ritalin and Adderall. Recent studies have shown a sharp uptick in the number of teens selling or giving their prescription medications to friends to get high. This abuse results in teens having to go to the emergency room due to overdose on these medications.

Also it is important to note that while taking Ritalin and Adderall as prescribed usually do not result in addiction, abuse can result in dependency issues. Some researchers have found that students attending college have also started to use Adderall and Ritalin without a prescription. This abuse by students without ADHD is done in order to increase their efficiency when they are studying.

ADHD Drug Problems: Difficult to Get Prescriptions Filled

In late 2011, many parents and doctors found that it was very difficult to get prescriptions filled for ADHD medications, especially for Ritalin and Adderall. Many drug stores reported that they were unable to get these medications from the manufacturers.

The reason for the shortages is not entirely clear as manufacturers cite shortages of the key active ingredients of these medications due to limits placed on the amount available by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The DEA quotas serve to act as a means to decrease the availability of the drug for abuse while maintaining enough medication for those who are legitimately prescribed the medicine. The DEA reported the authorized enough medication required to meet the demand for prescriptions and the shortages stemmed from manufacturers issues. The DEA did raise the quotas for 2012 but there continues to be spot shortages.

The shortages pose significant problems for those who are prescribed the medications. While doctors can try to change the medication to a non-stimulant treatment for ADHD, there is no guarantee the medication will be be helpful. Because of the problems with ADHD medication, parents are searching for alternative treatments for ADHD.

Natural remedies which have been shown to be very helpful may be a more rational alternative. Only time, research and more experience with these more appealing and less invasive natural alternatives will tell.
