Develop a Perfect Memory!

March 20, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 181

In the age of technology information is readily accessible and what we perceive can easily be deposited outside our mind's territory. This makes for a comfortable life, but also for a dormant memory. If you need to look something up you simply Google it or take a look onto a book's index. Once the time of memorizing information comes, whether it is for a school exam or it is a number of an attractive girl you just met, you will likely struggle and at best, inefficiently, engrave the desired information into an unstable, ready to vanish, storage compartment in your short-term memory.

Information stored in this manner usually has a low shelf-life and retains poor detail. Therefore seize a more effective approach and engage your creative and visual senses:

Build a memory palace! - A memory palace is a place of your choice, which you can visualize vividly and navigate through effortlessly, embedded into your spatial memory. What needs to be memorized is placed within the palace's premises, stored in a specific room, on a particular shelf or whichever location in the palace you choose. If it is a sequence or a list of things simply position them in separate rooms or according to a pattern such as starting at the entrance door and finishing on the uppermost story. When you want to retrieve a memory just enter the memory palace in which you inserted that information and navigate towards it recognizing cues associated with it.

Involve your senses - Once you have successfully constructed and learned to use memory palaces start filling them with various information desired to be retained. Try to engage as many senses as you can - attribute smells, feelings and sounds to the stored information. The more senses you involve the stickier the memory becomes and the easier will you find it to recall later on. Our brains rely on associations when retrieving memories so when you are trying to recall some past event you need to think of some triggers such as the location, weather, background, time of day and others which eventually guide yo to the correct destination. The richer the associations the more likely you are to trigger the desired cascade of thoughts.

If you want to use this type of memorization as your primary approach be sure to practice few minutes a day so you acquire practical agility and consistency. The memory palace, also known as the method of loci, has been used, with great results, for myriad centuries to absorb and recall a vast amount of information so give it a try you won't regret it!
