How To Become A Medical Transcriptionist

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 117

For those with basic word processing skills, computer knowledge and good listening skills, working as an entry-level medical transcriptionist is possible but it is rare. It is also possible to learn medical transcription on the job but the opportunity to do so is limited. Some hospitals offer classes on medical transcription but it is commonly limited to those who already have medical industry background.

If you are very much interested and motivated to become a medical transcriptionist, the very first step you must take is to acquire proper training. There are two options taken by those who want to start a career in this industry. The first one is home-based online training.

Several schools and colleges offer online medical transcription training. These training programs usually take between 3 months to 1 year to take depending on the training provider you sign-up with and how much time and effort you put into it. Since online training is mostly self-paced, a great amountdiscipline and focus is needed. You will be studying on your own without actual physical interaction unlike a typical classroom instruction. So be prepared to focus yourself and be consistent in your online training.

If you can behave with focus and discipline while taking the online training, you can be sure of finishing it in a shorter time than taking it via traditional means (i.e. classroom instruction).

The other way of taking the training is via traditional classroom instruction. This is perfect for those who learn best when focused and can think best when among fellow students and their instructors. Traditional classroom instruction for medical transcription usually takes between 18 months to 2 years. It may even take longer depending on subject availability. Remember some schools and colleges won't provide subjects when total enrollees don't meet a certain quota.

The skills and specialized knowledge that medical transcriptionists are required to learn will include:

  1. Word processing skills " This includes English language proficiency, grammar and punctuation skills, word processing software knowledge and computer literacy.
  2. Knowledge of medical terminologies, procedures, pharmacology and human anatomy " If you are serious about a medical transcription career, then you should be properly trained in these areas as well. You will be creating written documents from audio recordings produced by professional health care service providers and the recordings they made will contain medical terminologies, procedures, medications and talk about human anatomy most of the time if not all of the time. If you don't have a working knowledge on these areas, the transcription you make is bound to be erroneous. And that is critical to someone else's life.

The list above only contains some of the skill requirements from a medical transcriptionist. It may look a little hard but with proper training (that is a must) you will be able to learn it and apply for a medical transcription job if you are really serious and motivated. If you have proper training, the opportunities will be excellent and job security in this sector is high. So go and get trained. The industry is growing and you can grow along with it.
