How My Adult ADD Treatment Has Worked For Me

July 01, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 212

Many months ago, perhaps even a year ago or more, I finally approached my doctor and had a serious discussion with him. I explained how, for most of my adult life, I had been having trouble concentrating on even the simplest of tasks. I told him how I would be having a conversation with a friend, a coworker, or even my boss, and how my mind would wander off (and with it my eyes) and most of the time I could recall nothing of what my friends or acquaintances had said to me or asked of me. Talk about total embarrassment! He told me it sounded as if I had adult onset Attention Deficit Disorder. I explained how during my childhood I was scattered and excessively on the go from morning to night. Most people who are diagnosed with ADD as adults did have indications of the condition as children, too.

He told me about a medication he had prescribed to a few of his patients, and which he was receiving extremely positive feedback on. The medication was Adderall XR. He started me out on 15mg for the first couple of months. The effects of the medication were nearly immediate. This is not a medication such as Prozac that needs to build up in the system for weeks before you feel it working. This is a medication you can feel the effects of from Day 1.

Anyway, after the first month to 6 weeks, the medication took about 2 hours to fully kick in, and the effects would last for 5 hours or so after that. When I went to see him for my second follow up visit-you must see your doctor every month to see if the medication is having any negative impacts and to get a new prescription written as there are no refills allowed-he decided to up my dosage to 20mg to see if that would extend the drug's effectiveness timeline. I even went up to 25mg for a month, but I found that it did not aid me any more than the 20mg during the day, but the 25mg did make it more difficult for me to sleep at night.

I find that the medication enables me to concentrate much better during the day than when I don't take it. It can suppress the appetite, too, so if you have a need to lose weight as well as help to focus, this medication can assist you with both issues. I notice, too, that if I take the medication after 2:00 in the afternoon, I have a bit of difficulty falling asleep at night, although it does not seem to keep me up indefinitely.

I usually try and base the time I decide to take the medication each day on what my plans for the day are. For example, if I am working a Tuesday morning with one of my employer's busiest doctors, I will take the pill at 7:30 or 8:00 am. That way the medication helps me with the busiest part of that morning's session and I make fewer errors in scheduling and payment entry. If I am not going into the office on any given day and I plan to write articles in the afternoon after I finish getting my kids ready for school or whatever activities they have that day, or after I finish my housework, I will take the pill at 12:00 noon or 1:00 pm so that its effects will be in full swing by mid-afternoon. Some days I won't take the medication at all because I seem to feel more in touch with my mind and I don't want to waste a dose. However, these days are rare and most of the time I consider them a "fluke."

For me, Adderall has been a godsend. I thought I would never be able to focus or concentrate again after going so long with an extremely decreased ability to pay attention to even the simplest things.

The decision to take the medication Adderall XR should not be taken lightly. Any amphetamine carries with it the risk of addiction or other unpleasant side effects. These risks should be weighed against the benefits of taking this drug. As long as the benefits outweigh the risks, this medication can be a good choice for those who need it.

**Also, notably, an additional benefit: Adderall XR, being a stimulant, does increase your energy level. I find that chores around the house are accomplished in much shorter order than what was once the norm for me. That effect was an un-looked for bonus!!
