Dissecting Hard Facts Regarding Antidepressants

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 109

As the number of depression-stricken patients increase, a greater demand for antidepressants has also been noted, psychiatry experts say. Antidepressants remained in the top list as one of the best-selling drugs in the United States. Prescriptions of Wellbutrin, Effexor and Paxil SSRIs have skyrocketed as many medical journals reports of rapid increase on antidepressant dependencies. It is thereby of utmost importance that patients are well-educated on the antidepressant classification of SSRIs.

SSRIs are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is a type of antidepressants which functions to boost the serotonin neurotransmitter in a person's brain which reinforces happy and positive emotions. The National Institute of Mental Health breaks down the classes of antidepressants as:

1. Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or SNRIs 2. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs 3. Bupropion 4. Tricyclics 5. Tetracyclics 6. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs

SNRIs are similar to SSRIs which includes venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta). Bupropion, which works on the neurotransmitter dopamine, is unique in that it does not fit into any specific drug type. An example of bupropion is Wellbutrin. Tricyclics, tetracyclics and MAOIs belong to the older classes of antidepressant medications. For some people, tricyclics, tetracyclics, or MAOIs may be the best medications. However, among these classifications, SSRIs and SNRIs gained popularity because they do not cause as many side effects as older classes.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the most popular types SSRIs include:

1. Fluoxetine (Prozac) 2. Citalopram (Celexa) 3. Sertraline (Zoloft) 4. Paroxetine (Paxil) 5. Escitalopram (Lexapro).

The Health Department of the Harvard University conducted a review of the issues raised by SSRI antidepressants and tried to put them in perspective. The newsletter states that drug manufacturers have been advised to place warnings about the most serious dangers of antidepressant use, particularly the risk of suicide. So both the public and health care professionals are weighing risks and benefits anew. All clinicians and patients should be aware of potential problems, questions, and concerns.

James M. Ferguson, a doctor of medicine from the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Utah, School of Medicine says that although SSRIs have better overall safety and tolerability than older antidepressants, broad-based experience with SSRIs has shown the frequency and type of side effects to be increased relative to clinical trial data.

As patients develop a growing consciousness of SSRI side effects, numerous complaints have now been filed against antidepressant manufacturers. As reported numbers of antidepressant users have marked depression as one of the most crippling disorders, these complaints have progressed a genre of Paxil lawsuits. The need for more information and awareness now arise among all depression-stricken patients.

Paroxetine antidepressant Paxil SSRIs belongs to the type known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is a popular medication for causes of medical conditions such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders. Its side effects placed it in the center of controversy and have sparked up various lawsuits. Learn more about Paxil Lawsuit and get updates.
