Are Shoulder Pain Pumps Causing Cartilage Breakdown?

April 30, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 122

These injections administer pain medication directly to the affected area. While the idea may seem sound in theory, in practice, these pumps have actually shown to cause further damage to the shoulder. Defective products have even caused cartilage breakdown, leading to an increase in medical malpractice cases related to these injections.

Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL) refers to a condition in which complete cartilage breakdown in the shoulder causes the bones to contact each other at the joint. Without cartilage to separate them, the bones rub together with every shoulder movement. Ironically, treatment intended to minimize pain can actually lead to a condition that is far more painful than the original shoulder injury.

The issue has been studied by several major medical organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, but the U. S. Food and Drug Administration reports that while the connection between this intense post-surgery pain and shoulder pain pump injections is quite clear, the reason for the cartilage breakdown has yet to be discovered.

One possibility, however, involves defective products.

Since the science behind these pain pumps seems sound to most experts, many suspect that the pumps themselves are constructed poorly. It may be that the designers of these products need to return to the drawing board, but in the meantime, recipients of a surgery intended to prevent shoulder pain are becoming plaintiffs in medical malpractice lawsuits after finding themselves with pain that has increased rather than lessened.

The most unfortunate aspect of this situation is that the cartilage damage caused by shoulder pain pump injections is irreversible. The lifelong impact of this is not only intense pain requiring expensive prescription medications, but also inability to perform regular tasks using the affected shoulder. For many, this means loss of wages, as very few employment options exist that do not require use of the shoulder joints.

Should you find yourself experiencing cartilage damage due to defective products and the use of shoulder pain pump injections, you are entitled to restitution. An attorney experienced with medical malpractice lawsuits can help you pursue your claim in court. If the initial shoulder injury occurred on the job, you may also be entitled to workers' compensation benefits.

Be cautious of the possibility of defective products when opting for shoulder pain pump injections, and if you already suffer from the related cartilage degradation, contact a medical malpractice attorney who can assist you in receiving compensation.
