EHR - What Is ONC Certification and Why Do You Need It?

February 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 150

Along with a raft of new proposed regulations and already inked regulatory changes for 2012 and beyond, doctors may be hearing about the "ONC certification," a term linked to new HITECH incentives from the federal government. Many physician practices are already paying attention to some hefty payouts that they could be eligible to receive in future years by adopting certain kinds of government-approved electronic health record solutions. The checks that the government will be sending to doctors are meant to help to propel the American health care industry as a whole into the 21st century, with more practices using digital documents and high-tech tools instead of the old paper and pen system, where bulky physical documents build up, causing storage issues and, in many cases, inefficient outcomes and disorganization of patient data.

Getting the Right EHR Systems

What doctors find when they dig into the fine print of the HITECH incentive program is that not all EHR systems are created equal. Rather, the systems that doctors use need to have a special ONC certification. But like much of the other alphabet soup that surrounds the industry, the acronym is pretty opaque to most doctors, as well as the overwhelming majority of consumers. Understanding this key certification will get doctors closer to benefiting from the modernizations of their offices.

ONC Certification

The term "ONC Certification" stands for a certification that comes from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. This arm of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is charged with spearheading Health IT initiatives and was created by the HITECH act of 2009.

So what is important to the ONC? A list of goals for ONC-approved EHR systems on the ONC web site includes general elements of superior digital record systems like security and quality, along with care-oriented goals like the ability to inform medical decisions, and early detection and prevention of chronic health conditions. The ONC also wants doctors to implement systems that implement "meaningful public input" and reduce "health disparities." All of this goes into the criteria set by this government group for new electronic systems that will get doctors money to help with core processes like training that will come along with these innovations.

What Doctors Gain

When physician practices implement electronic record systems, they often save tremendous amounts of time and effort in providing a consistent level of care that brings in more revenue for the office on a regular basis. If their systems are ONC certified, and they meet other HITECH requirements, they can also receive many thousands of dollars from the federal government over a number of years. When your practice is looking for a new and modern digital record system, make sure to ask your third-party supplier if their offering is ONC certified, so that you can be sure that you are building a path toward successful application for this critical source of funding.
