Low Grades In Math? Help Is On The Way!

February 19, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 118

Too many children are moved from grade to grade without really knowing the easiest math facts. They can bluff their way along and pass tests by using fingers to count. Without correcting this problem, math becomes a "pain" and students dislike math class more and more. Almost every good job requires adequate math skills. Increasingly employers demand advanced math skills. Increasingly getting into college requires competency in math.

If your 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th grade child is making poor grades in math, you may be able to help him or her. A little (20 minutes-two or three times a week) effort to find and correct deficiencies can pay off in a happier, more confident child and much less frustration in the household. Perhaps you lack the confidence to work with your child. Sometimes a brother, sister, grandparent or friend can serve as tutor. But if you do it yourself, you may surprised at your own math improvement as you proceed!

Here is a quick way to find out if your child needs special help. Just ask him or her to solve these quickly in his head without using pencil and paper. (You read the numbers to him/her.)

7 + 7 =

3 x 6 =

10 x 3 =

20 - 9 =

4 x 4 =

What is half of 16? What is 100 + 14 - 10? What is 40 + 50?

When counting by 4s, what number comes after 12?...after 24?

Which is the smaller number: 1/4 or 1/8?

Which number is larger:.4 or.06?

If your child stumbles on some of these easy problems, or can't do them without using fingers or pencil and paper, it indicates a definite need for remedial help. It also shows that the easiest addition and multiplication facts are not yet committed to memory.

Start by memorizing the sets of two numbers that add up to ten (3 + 7, etc.). Then memorize the sums of two "like" numbers (7 + 7, etc.) through 10 + 10. The same procedure applies to learning multiplication. Begin with 2 x any digit (2 x 4, etc.), then follow with "like" digits (4 x 4, etc.). These kinds of things need to be memorized well enough for very fast responses. These are the necessary first steps that will help ensure future success in math.

Math will become more fun as each success is achieved. Also remember, when tutoring, vary the lesson topics so your child will not lose interest. Limit tutoring sessions to no more than 30 minutes. Guides are available especially for home tutoring that can diagnose the needs as well as fix any deficiencies in an easy, fun manner.

After you try these techniques, you will have a pretty good idea of whether some remedial work on basic math facts would be a good idea. The MATH CATCH-UP GUIDE covers these areas plus other 5th and 6th grade math concepts in an enjoyable 38 lesson format.

The creator of the Math Catch-up Guide, Bill Swift, is a retired special education teacher who has developed practical techniques for improving math comprehension. A parent, sibling or tutor can help an upper elementary (4th-7th grade) pupil make quick progress. Please go to ( for more information and to purchase your copy of the guide.
