Karate for Adults - It's Not What You Think

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 146

When I say "Martial Arts," what's the first thing that pops into your head? People kicking and punching, yelling loudly, and breaking boards and bricks are often what comes up first. Don't get me wrong, those are definitely the "martial" part of it. But there is more to it. Much more.

You see, martial arts is about getting better physically and mentally. From a physical standpoint you develop better muscle tone. Along with muscle tone comes flexibility. When these two are combined, it leads to less injuries in your day-to-day activities. While building this strength and flexibility your cardiovascular system becomes more developed. In martial arts classes this helps when students reach the more advanced levels and technique becomes much harder. All this leads to better endurance.

On the mental side of things, martial arts has so many benefits. The first is that you get to challenge yourself. We are either growing or dying. You only grow when you are learning something new or being challenged. In martial arts class you get both. Plus you have the added benefit of an instructor to guide you every step of the way. This goes a long way in building more confidence in yourself.

The second mental benefit is stress reduction. Martial arts leads to stress reduction in a couple of ways. Number one, we all have pent-up energy at the end of the day we need to get rid of. Physical activity is the best way to do this. What makes martial arts especially unique for this aspect is that you have to focused on what you are learning while you are moving. In turn, you can't focus on what was stressing you out for the day. It always amazes me to see adults at the end of class time. They come in all tensed up, but leave laughing and smiling.

The third mental benefit is the socialization aspect. Most people are either at work, at home, or someplace with their family. It is rare that adults get to spend time with other like-minded adults, in a mutually beneficial atmosphere. It is not uncommon for me to finish class (adults are the last class of the evening), shut all the lights off and get ready to head home, only to find many of the adults to still be standing in the parking lot talking. Sometimes they talk about what they did in class. Often times it's random conversation. In either case, they get to be themselves for a while.

If you are looking for a change of pace, and a way to better yourself physically and mentally, you may want to look into doing some martial arts.
