Email Marketing: Stay in Touch With Your Customers to Keep Them Coming Back

June 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 175

In 2011, American businesses spent $1.51 billion on email marketing, and that number is expected to double over the next few years. But what is email marketing, and how can you get your business in on the action? There are a couple of different types of email marketing. Let's have a look at them in detail.

Types of Email Communication

Newsletters are a familiar format. Like printed newsletters, they typically are created and sent out on a regular basis to a list of subscribers. Effective newsletters can feature informational articles related to your products and services, details about new products, links to your company's blog or social media accounts, information about upcoming events such as a sale or an in-shop event.

Transactional emails are the emails you may send related to specific transactions, such as a purchase or request for a price quote. These are very likely to be opened and read by the customer, so don't waste the opportunity. It's a great idea to add a few links to suggested products or services, a quick helpful tip, or even a coupon to engage the customer and keep them coming back.

Direct mail is a common type of email marketing but is not very popular with customers. A company can buy or rent a list of email addresses, and "cold-call" those addresses with an advertising email. Most of these types of mail get filtered into spam folders. Those that make it to the customer's inbox are usually deleted, and often do nothing but earn a scowl of ill-will from the customer - not the beginning of a productive relationship.

Best Practices

The best way to ensure that your emails are read is to ensure that they are valuable to the customer. By consistently providing valuable information or valuable savings (or both), the customer will learn that it is worth their time to engage with your company. A weekly helpful tip from a craft supply company or a 10 percent off coupon from a local oil change mechanic will increase goodwill and customer loyalty. Satisfied customers and word of mouth are your best marketing tools.

In the rush to provide email content to your customers and subscribers, take care not to become annoying. Many people feel overwhelmed by the flood of emails they deal with each day, so they are very likely to weed out the ones that don't meet their needs. If a particular newsletter shows up in their inbox every day but only provides a minimal amount of value, it's on the chopping block. Instead of flooding their inboxes daily, try condensing your information into a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly digest.

Targeted or personalized emails add an extra edge to your emails. Addressing your customer by name makes him feel like a valued customer, even if he realizes it was addressed by a software plug-in. Mention her last purchase or service date, and make a recommendation based on it, and she's likely to take notice. This is especially beneficial for stores, which can suggest products that are similar to previous purchases ( has been doing this for years). If you provide services that are often repeated or scheduled, like manicures or oil changes, sending a reminder to your customers after the expected amount of time has passed can really give you an edge.

Almost half of American internet users check either email every single day. Emails delivered in the wee hours between 1 and 5 a.m. are the most likely to be opened (they're right on top of the pile in the morning). Transactional emails are read approximately 51% of the time, and newsletters around 36%. This number is dependent on many factors, of course. Opt-in subscriptions are the most popular with customers (and most likely to be read) - an email they have chosen to receive is always better than one that they didn't request.

Email marketing has a distinct advantage over traditional mail - tracking. With the proper software, an email click can be tracked directly to an online purchase, giving you a precise statistic on the effectiveness of your emails. These tracking methods have proven high efficiency rates for email communications, showing them to be second only to search marketing (such as search ads and search engine optimization).

If you haven't tried using email to reach your customers, now is the time to begin. No matter what kind of business you have, there are people out there who want your product, and they're checking their email right now.
