Want to Keep Great IT Talent? Engage Them

It is no secret that it's difficult to hire great talent. The economy and high unemployment has helped retention of current IT talent, but the fact is that your most talented tech employees will be aware of the market for their particular skills and capabilities. Are you doing what it takes to keep them?

It's not always about the money, by the way. It is my experience that the 'keepers' are not driven by money. Don't be cheap, but don't try to buy loyalty either. Here are a few ideas to help you keep your talented IT personnel engaged.

Ask them what they think and how they might improve things.

Don't do this unless you will provide feedback. These are intelligent people who love to enable others and the business to be successful and will look to the door if they believe you are only playing interested.If IT is not part of the solution think tank you will have failure where technology could have been able to help. Also, you may have made a technology decision where technology might not have been the best answer. Great IT talent knows when to use and not use technology to solve problems.

Help them get better at what they do.

Provide training. The cost of additional training for key IT personnel is negligible to the savings that will be obtained and will make your pros feel as though they are valued and being rewarded.Make sure your managers communicate with their IT reports with clarity about expectations and the perception of their work. Good, bad or indifferent, the best of the best will always be motivated by well thought out feedback and take it as an opportunity to get better in all areas. Don't forget to address their business acumen.

Challenge them!

There is nothing that will get IT talent looking for a new door to open faster than boredom. Companies must keep theses staffers engaged, accountable, focused and entertained. Entertainment may have just shocked you, but that would be because you aren't considering what makes a geek happy. New projects, process improvement, team and personal development and belief that the company believes in them and cares what they do will entertain nearly any geek.

Of course there are other ways, but these are the key areas I address in keeping top IT talent. I have been very successful with these tools sprinkled wisely across the IT organization. They also provided the added benefits of increased end-user/customer satisfaction and better business decisions in general, a definite win-win.
