How Effective A Manager Are You?

Being a manager is a tough role. Most managers find that they have to please those that they manage day to day as well as keeping their boss happy. In addition to all of the above you probably still have a bunch of work that you have to do personally. It is easy to lose sight of what it takes to be an effective manager. So what makes a manager effective and how effective are you?

You Set Clear Expectations

If you want people to deliver a specific outcome or result they need clarity on expectations. Yet the reality is that managers are often extremely vague on expectations, preferring instead to rely on generic job descriptions. If you want better results, make the time to clearly specify expectations.

You Are Personally Productive

One thing you can be certain about is that as a manager you are unlikely to find yourself with a shortage of work. In fact, quite the opposite is probably more accurate most of the time. As a result you need to be highly organised and make every hour count. Start seeing time as an investment the way you do money and invest it wisely.

You Get Out Of The Way

Some managers delegate, which is great, and then undo the great work by micro-managing people. Others don't delegate and then wonder why they are stressed and struggling to get things done. If you are going to succeed as a manager you need to be willing to delegate and get out of the way.

You Don't Resolve All Of The Problems

It might be tempting to keep giving people all the answers to their problems. The trouble is, sooner or later people will stop thinking for themselves for the easy life. Start to coach people to solve their own problems rather than just giving them the solutions.

You Involve People

No-one will agree with every decision you take. By the same token, if you impose things on people all of the time they will become demoralised. Be willing to listen and act on others' ideas.

You Help Others Succeed

I know that all the managers who really motivated me were those who took a real interest in helping me grow, get on and achieve more career success. The truth is, this type of manager is often a rarity these days and if you adopt this style you will stand out from the crowd.

The Bottom Line: You will never do a perfect job all of the time but often making simple changes on what you do and how you act as a manager can yield big successes.
