The Versatility of Pork

February 05, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 141

Pork is famously called the other white meat. What most budding chefs and foodies don't appreciate, however, is just how versatile this meat truly is.

Cuts of pork usually very lean or very fatty. Because these cuts vary from one another greatly, they have to be prepared in distinct manners in order to ensure that the cuts of meat are flavorful once prepared.

Pork tenderloin, for example, is the most popular type of lean pork meat. Because it is lean, the mean is usually marinated or placed in a brine solution for several hours or overnight before cooking is to take place. Even after it is removed from the marinade, the tenderloin is then cooked at a lower temperature. Because it contains less fat, there is a risk of the meat becoming dry as it cooks. In order to avoid this, some people choose to even go a step further and baste the tenderloin every ten minutes or so while it is cooking.

Pork shoulder, on the other hand, is a very fatty piece of meat. Boston butt is the most popular type of pork shoulder meat sold today. It is an excellent cut of meat for use as a roast. The cut is typically browned and then placed in a pot with vegetables and cooked in an oven for several hours. Once it is fully cooked, the meat is extra tender and moist. The meat of the Boston butt roast which has been cooked and allowed to cool to near room temperature can be pulled apart and mixed with sauces in order to make pulled pork sandwiches.

The difference between the shoulder roast and tenderloin couldn't be any more obvious. While tenderloin cooks quickly and is an excellent solution for a quick and easy dinner, the shoulder roast takes time and preparation and must be cooked slowly in order to achieve the maximum results.

Irregardless of your health situation, there is a cut of pork made for you. Those who are more indulgent will love the moist texture and flavoring of the pork shoulder. While those who are more health conscious can enjoy the lean tenderloin without feeling guilty. A three ounce serving of tenderloin, for example, contains around one hundred and forty calories and has four grams of fat, making it comparable to boneless, skinless chicken breast.

Pork can also be prepared several different ways, including being grilled, stewed, broiled, fried, or even baked. It also pairs well with variety of fruits and vegetables. Because of this, it is an excellent choice for your dinner needs.
