A Nerd's Guide To Dieting

May 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 172

Nerd's are not known for their dieting prowess. After all, there is no nerd who looks like a fit and trim movie star. Certainly, someone who eats left over pizza and drinks profuse quantities of some super caffeine laced drink every hour, seems like the most unlikely person to guide anyone in dieting. But if truth were known, nerds in general have a weight problem.

Being a nerd, I had a weight problem that had built up over the last 30 years. So being a nerd I solved it with physics chemistry and technology. You can to if you read this article.

The solution to weight loss is simple. You do not need any fancy plan or anything glycemic. The nerd diet plan is to eat exactly what you eat today and use physics, chemistry, and technology to reduce your weight.

Physics is simple. We measure food energy ingested and match it to the energy we use everyday. This energy is measured in calories. Physics says calories in should equal calories out to maintain the same weight. This is roughly 1,500 calories a day. If we ingest more calories than we use, our weight increases. Conversely, a diet is ingesting fewer calories than we use so that our weight decreases. To take off 2 pounds a week, ingesting 200 to 300 calories less than what we use is needed. The laws of physics as we understand them work. Unlike The Law that is subject to moral relativism, the Laws of Physics are not open to interpretation. So ingesting fewer calories than we use daily over time results in losing weight.

Chemistry is the second key. This is all about keeping our blood sugar level a consistent level over the course of a day. If the blood sugar level rises and falls like a roller coaster, we get hungry and binge on food to bring it back in line. The solution is to eat breakfast, eat morning snack, eat lunch, eat afternoon snack, eat dinner and finally eat evening snack. With all meals varying somewhat in size, the blood sugar or glycemic level (or whatever you wish to call it), remains consistent over the day. With a consistent blood sugar level we do not binge and overeat.

Finally, we have technology the area in which nerds excel. Everything sounds simple so far, but it is not because how do you know the calories you are consuming. There are fancy ways of tracking by scoring foods, using coolers, talking with friends, buying anything that says diet at the store. Nerds have the advantage because there are excellent calorie counting tools available for Android and iPhone smartphones. There are digital scales for measuring food weights and for measuring people's weight. The smartphone tools are free and the other weighing tools cost less than one week's payment for a fancy food plan. Using these tools makes tracking calories easy.

The smartphone tools typically let you set your weight goal and the amount of weight loss you wish each week. They then compute the target daily calorie intake based upon your age, height, and weight. This is re-calibrated as weight is lost. My start was 1,440 calories, adjusted to 1,220 calories and is now about 1,400 calories per day. These tools track your daily calorie intake and your daily weight. The smartphone calorie counting tools let you enter the food you eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. With the smart phone you can scan the bar code on the food packages to see how many calories are contained in one serving.

Watch servings carefully. Food manufacturers set the serving proportion to get a 100 to 200 calorie level in the serving size. Most foods come with many servings. For example, vegetable lasagna has about 100 calories per serving. One package is typically split between two people at dinner. A single vegetable lasagna package contains 10 servings. This meant that for that meal 5 servings or 500 calories are consumed. That is the maximum calories you should eat for a meal. The bottom line is watch servings as well as the calories.

Gong out to dinner, the smart phone diet tools have those food in their data base as well for many restaurants. Unique food, enter the contents individually and approximate serving sizes to get a total calorie count.

This works. In my case I was able to return to what I weighed in my 20's. That was 40 pounds less than when I started. This just demonstrates that nerds know as much or more about dieting than any diet guru, house wife of somewhere or movie star hunk or beauty.
