Newsletter Tips - Now You're Building a List, What Do You Send to Subscribers?

Now you've made the decision to start building an email list - but the question is, what do you send to subscribers? One problem that most new marketers face is what to send to their list. Those first few emails are pretty easy to write, thanking those who signed up for becoming a subscriber, giving your subscribers a little "glimpse" into what you do, etc. After those first two or three messages, it can be tough. What to send? If you're planning on sending out a weekly or monthly newsletter, we'll talk about a few ideas in this article.

First of all, put the intimidation behind you. Don't be afraid to mail your list; after all, they signed up so they could hear more from you! What you don't want to do is promote an affiliate product (or your own product, for that matter) in every message. In general, most marketers promote in about every 2nd or 3rd mailing. Promoting in every mail you send out will lead to a great number of people on your list unsubscribing, which you definitely want to avoid!

Now, here are a few newsletter ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

First of all, a newsletter does not have to be formatted like a newspaper, and you don't have to have everything just "so-so." Your subscribers didn't sign up with you to see how proficient you are at formatting - they want something of value. Share a relevant news story, video or even a coupon code.

Many marketers are afraid to send their subscribers to any site but their own, but you really should share good information with your visitors - they'll come to trust you even more. If you've read a great blog post on a blog in your niche, share it! Send a link to a forum discussion that you found really awesome. There are many things you can share in your emails, without having to fill your message with content. Short and sweet is good.

Here are a few email newsletter ideas to think about:

  • Link to a news story that relevant to your niche, and share your thoughts about the story with your list.
  • Send your subscribers a quick tip or how-to that most will find helpful
  • People love to save! Send your list news about a coupon code, special offer or sale that you ran across.
  • Send a link to your latest blog post, or inform your list of a limited time offer on an affiliate product you are promoting. This brings up another point - it's essential that you keep up to date with the products you are promoting, and any "deals" that you need to inform your list about!
  • YouTube videos - niche specific
  • Q & A - Ask your readers questions about what their goals are, their specific problems, what they want to achieve - any questions relevant to your niche. When they answer, make a list of common questions and your answers, and mail it to your entire list.

Now, BEFORE you write an email, take time to consider what your want your email to accomplish. What do you feel that your readers expect from you? It's often helpful to go back and review what your "free" giveaway was that enticed your reader to sign up. Chances are, anything related to your giveaway will be useful, since that is what your reader signed up for!

How often should you email your list? This is hard to pinpoint, and depends upon your niche. Many marketers mail every day, some once each week, some every two weeks, others once a month. Once you determine how often you want to mail your list (or what would be most effective), stick to a schedule. It's very important that your subscribers know when to look forward to more from you!

Most important of all, keep all of the information you send to your list relevant to the reason they subscribed, and to your niche.
