List Building - The 10 Commandments

April 22, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 153

Here are The 10 Commandments of list building. If you obey these commandments, you will be blessed with internet marketing success.

1. Thou Shalt Always Use An Opt-In Form.

No matter what your online business strategy is, if you are not using some type of opt-in form in every marketing project, then you are missing a significant list building (revenue) opportunity. One of the allures of being an affiliate marketer is that you don't need a website to make money. However, in the long run, setting up a squeeze/landing/capture page to collect opt-ins is a very small price to pay for this valuable future income stream. Remember the adage - THE MONEY IS IN THE LIST. This is especially true if you are interested in an auto-pilot business opportunity.

2. Thou Shalt Use A High Quality Autoresponder.

If there is one place that you don't want to go cheap, it is selecting an autoresponder. There are plenty of horror stories on various forums about failed startup companies and do-it-yourself software. The right move here is to research the companies you see in other notable marketer's emails. The top tier autoresponders will be a bit more expensive, but they are worth the investment in terms of experience, reliability, service, and training.

3. Thou Shalt Continuously Test.

You should continuously test different approaches to your list building efforts. Is your copy as effective as it could be? Is there a better offer you can make? Are there other keywords that will get better results? Are there other marketing strategies or lists that will produce improved results? Just make sure that you follow the golden rule of effective testing - TEST ONLY ONE CHANGE AT A TIME.

4. Thou Shalt Track Thy Results.

Unless you can track the results of your list building efforts, you won't know how well (or poorly) you are doing. Commandment 3 above is pointless if you don't follow Commandment 4. If you have multiple marketing efforts going on (list broadcasts, joint ventures, article marketing, etc.), are you able to track the results of each of those campaigns? This commandment requires that you put some thought into the planning process. Always ask the question: How will I know if this is working? The answer will inevitably require you to implement some sort of tracking mechanism.

5. Thou Shalt Offer Value.

Any business - online or bricks-and-mortar - will fail if customers do not feel they are getting value for their money/time/effort. Make offers that have a strong perceived value to join your list and to remain on your list.

6. Thou Shalt Strive To Be Unique.

An old saying states that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. However, the imitator is NOT the one being flattered. Always try to be unique in your list building marketing efforts and in the communications to your subscribers. If you're using suggested emails from an affiliate marketer, change the copy a bit to put your own individual twist on it. This is a very critical element in "branding" yourself to your list.

7. Thou Shalt Email Your List(s) Regularly And Often.

A major factor in effective list building is retaining existing subscribers. If you are not maintaining regular and frequent communication with subscribers once they have joined, they will opt-out, or be unresponsive to your offers. When opt-outs equal or exceed new subscribers, you are no longer building your list.

8. Thou Shalt Build Relationships.

People buy from people they know and trust. All of your communications from the initial opt-in, and throughout a subscriber's tenure on your list, should have the goal of solidifying your relationship with every individual. If you obey commandments 5, 6, and 7, you will be well on your way to following this commandment.

9. Thou Shalt Always Seek New Subscribers.

Always be on the lookout for opportunities for new subscribers. This takes Commandments 1 & 7 to the next level. As stated previously, if you are not striving to grow your business (list), it will begin to die.

10. Thou Shalt Honor Thy Niches.

Although this should be obvious, always make sure your lists are well-defined, and your communications are appropriate for each of your different niche lists. Don't send weight loss emails to your dog training subscribers. If you violate this commandment you will also be violating Commandments 5 & 8.
