List Building From the Ground Up - The 4 Basic Building Blocks

List Building has been going on as long as people have traded goods. It might not have always been called "List Building," but it was there - traders and salesmen keeping track of who bought or traded with them before, so as to be able to try to trade again with them later. It makes perfect sense as a business practice, after all. "Remember where the money was, there might be more there next time." Some things won't change.

In List Building, as in business in general, there are certain components required in order to successfully complete the task at hand. The necessary components for an online transaction are having something to sell, a way to sell it, a way to get paid, and a way to deliver. Sure, it can get a lot more complicated, but the fundamentals won't change. Once you know the fundamentals, the complexities are a lot easier to understand.

What are the basic components of list building?

1) You need people interested in what you are selling. Your primary goal is to get an e-mail address from everyone who lands on your webpage. That's an absolutely unrealistic goal, but the chances of getting an address improve remarkably if you're putting yourself in front of people who have some interest in what you're selling. You're probably not going to sell a lot of waffle irons to a surfing club, but I'm pretty certain you could find people looking for waffle irons if you tried.

2) You need to get in front of them. You've got to get into the game. If you want to do business online, obviously you need to be online. There are ways to do that without having your own hosting account, but even where you're paying for it indirectly or not at all, it's good to be aware as you plan for the growth and eventual expansion of your business.

3) You need a 'place' to collect their names. Once you've got a way to get online, you need a "face" to present to the web surfers who find you - whether it's a single page, a blog, or a larger website. You need to make a good first impression and entice them to give their name and e-mail address. One successful strategy for achieving this is to offer them something of value in exchange for their information. One common practice is offering a free report or ecourse by return email. If they want the offer, they will give their e-mail address without a thought. And finally...,

4) You need a way to maintain and cultivate the relationship. Once you've established this connection with your prospect or customer, you want to maintain the relationship. Ultimately, you would like to turn them into a customer, then a repeat customer. This can be done through some form of regular newsletter, occasional informational messages, or blog posts. Give them more freebies once in a while, give them pieces of useful information, and then, occasionally sprinkle in your own or your affiliate offers.

These are the same steps that they have always been, just updated for the 21st century. I have always been taught that once you understand the basics, you can dress them up in many different ways. There are many contemporary tools, techniques, and strategies for making a living in today's online world. These modern utilities, strategies, and tools build on one or more of the four cornerstones above. ALL of them are successful, if you take time enough to learn what you're doing and give your efforts time to work.

There are many ways to get your business started online. Anyone can make money online. REALLY!! But remember - the ones that do best, the ones that stay longest, all have their own lists.
