Lighting Your Garage Effectively

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

A garage space can be many things. From a craft station to a workbench to a place for your car, a garage is used for many different tasks. But without the right lighting fixtures for your garage, tasks can be difficult at best. Use these tips and techniques for lighting your garage space and you can be sure you're going to get the most out of your garage.

Ambient Lighting

One of the easiest and most common ways to illuminate the garage is by using an ambient light source. This easy to employ strategy can use a variety of fixtures to create an ambient light source. The most common ambient lighting systems use a series of four foot fluorescent bulbs to light the garage area. These should be placed on the ceiling, out of range of the garage door. Whether they are all on a single switch or they function separately, it's a good idea to add fluorescent type ballast with a double four foot bulb to your garage lighting scheme.

Task Lighting

When your garage is used for a workbench, craft area or laundry room, task lights are an important part of the garage lighting system. Task lighting solutions like recessed ceiling lights work excellent in garage spaces. These out of the way lighting solutions stay away from cars and garage doors easily and shine a bright and direct to the areas you need it most. A dimmer switch will make recessed lights able to turn on low when you leave at night or bright when you need them for working.

When you have a built in work area or laundry section set aside in your garage space, getting the brightest light possible as close to the area you need is very important. Pendant lights can make for a great addition to any garage lighting scheme. Hanging lights overtop of workbenches, laundry areas and craft tables all keep garage spaces well lit and do it with style. Be sure to install all hanging lights far from garage doors, walkways and parked cars.

An LED or light emitting diode is a fixture that uses a series of small energy efficient bulbs to create light. When clustered together, they produce more lumens per watt than conventional light bulbs. LED's can be used in a wide variety of fixtures and lighting systems, so you can be sure you're going to get the perfect LED lighting for your garage at a price you can afford.

Another question that should be answered when deciding if lights under your cabinets are right for your kitchen is "will they actually serve a purpose"? If you use your under cabinet space for blenders, toasters and other big kitchen gadgets, you may find that under cabinet kitchen lighting is the perfect solution for your needs. If you have heavy appliances on your counter with very little counter space under your cabinets, you may want to consider another form of lighting.

No matter what type of under cabinet light fixture you may want, getting the electricity to that location is crucial to the entire system. Access to power can come from a nearby outlet or switch. Most electricians can easily snake their way behind drywall or cleverly disguise their wires under the cabinet edge. Access may be limited in kitchen cabinet areas that are separate from the main cabinets. Access may be limited for installing under cabinet light fixtures for many reasons:

· Nearest electrical source is too far away

· Plumbing pipes are blocking the route

· Building codes prevent under cabinet lighting

· Cabinet profile is too low

· Under cabinet appliances block the light fixture

One of the best ways to get the under cabinet lighting fixture that's perfect for your cabinets is to install a light emitting diode or LED fixture. These lights have an extremely low profile, work using very small amounts of electricity and have thinner, less visible wires, perfect for hiding under or in any cabinet space. An LED fixture also produces less heat, so you can install them in cabinets with a very low profile.
