Leadership Coaching: Leadership In Small And Big Ways

Simple Acts Of Kindness

Small things sometimes make a big impact. Simple acts of kindness sometimes go a long way.

One day when I was running errands, I returned to my car at the shopping mall. Just as I got to the door, I noticed a small post- it note on my windshield. It said "I drove by and noticed that your rear tire is low". Just a small notation but it saved me from damaging my wheel or having problems on the freeway. I was able to stay at a safe location and have it fixed. That small note made a big impact.

On another morning when I was mowing the lawn, the mower got stuck on the steep bank I was trimming. It was caught in a nasty angle with one of its tire spinning. A gentleman happened to drive by and noticed the situation. He turned around, got off his car and helped me ease the machine down the incline. The guy could just have drove by at 60 mph, be he did not. He saw the problem and chose to take action. His thoughtful act was helpful.

Kindness From Strangers

Then there was another time when I received a delivery for a new appliance. As part of the service, however, an old appliance has to be taken. The delivery man loaded the old appliance, but I was struck when he asked if there were any other old appliances we would like to get rid of. I was stopped in tracks by his question because in our country, we pay to have our old appliances taken to the recycling center. The delivery company probably received a salvage value for old appliances, but I was struck when the delivery man said "like an old refrigerator". I was surprised by his willingness to do the service. The gesture of loading a refrigerator is something. It was an impactful and memorable service from a stranger.

True Leadership

Leadership is not only exhibited on a grand scale. A leader is a person who chooses to do something and is courageous enough to make a difference. It may just be one small act of kindness, but its effect is lasting and its consequences significant.

One small act of kindness can be leadership. Does your leadership take notice of such small yet meaningful deeds?

Leadership needs you to make a choice and to take responsibility. It starts with your willingness to take action.
