Tips on Making Your Own Language Lessons on Improving Your English Vocabulary

Language lessons' goal is not to only educate you on a foreign language but to also help you be able to use it outside the classroom. There is a big difference on knowing words and phrases of a language and being able to actually speak it in dialogues or conversations. This is what is commonly known as the passive vocabulary vs. the active vocabulary. More often than not, a student's passive vocabulary is bigger than the one's they actually use or their active vocabulary is really small and limited. There are a lot of free study plans or techniques available that can be your own lesson and exercise to increase your vocabulary.

1. Reading books, newspapers and magazines is a really great way to improve your vocabulary. I am pretty sure that you have heard of this before from your own parents, but this is very true and has been proven really effective. Seeing words form sentences or phrases will actually help you remember these words easier and make use of it in actual conversations. Also, this will even help you be more up to date with current events and learn more about the culture of the language you are studying.

2. Make use of your household appliances and furniture. If you can, stick on "post-its" on your 'computer', 'cooking stove', 'microwave oven', 'bed' and so on and so forth. This will help you remember and aid you to widen your lexis or your vocabulary. Seeing these words all the time should serve as a reminder in order for you to not forget some of the basic terminologies around your own home. Try to memorize these words first and then practice on the correct pronunciation of these words later on.

3. Watching movies in the theatre or at home via DVDs can also help. Although if you are a beginner in terms of studying English, you may have a hard time following the story or the synopsis of the movie. So it would be great if you could watch with someone who can translate anything that you did not understand.

4. Make a list of specific words that you will often hear or use in your chosen field of work such as being a doctor, an architect or a nurse; or your favorite past time or hobby like golf, diving, running, surfing and many more. If you concentrate on words that are often used by your own colleagues then it would be much easier to be able to put in these words in your conversations.

Building your vocabulary will do well in your school, professional life and even your social life. Language lessons on increasing your English vocabulary is for sure a very profitable investment as it will aid you in getting that job you have always wanted. So don't stop trying and allocate at least an hour a day of focused studying and this will ensure you of learning the language quickly. Do not worry too much about learning everything because "learning" is a never ending thing, as you go on, you will learn new words everyday especially when you start practicing them on conversing with other people.
