Things You Should Know Before Learning The Japanese Language

April 18, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 95

Learning the Japanese Language starts with understanding the language first. Just like any other language, it differs in the spoken and written aspects. It would help to learn the language more effectively if you started learning more about the language before learning the actual language.

As opposed to other languages that have words which vary in terms of gender, the Japanese Language extensively makes use of honorifics. Words and phrases are different when used in different settings. There are variations according to the social status of the person you are speaking to or speaking of. A single idea may be expressed differently, depending on your purpose. One word may be expressed politely, humble or in a respectful manner. Even without going to the details, the basic sentence structure of this language takes a respectful and humble tone.

When it comes to writing, it may be a challenge for some. Their Japanese Language makes use of the kanji characters from Chinese and its very own kanji script which are divided into two groups. The kana script has 46 distinct characters as to sound, but are written differently in katakana or hiragana. Japanese words are spelled out using the hiragana, while western words or concepts are spelled out using the katakana. The Latin letters are called romaji, which are used for acronyms and proper nouns.

Traditionally, reading a body of text is done starting from the right side towards the left. A word or sentence is written from top to bottom. To adapt with the highly modernizing world, some are already writing texts using the western format. You may find articles in the Japanese language written from the top to the bottom of the page and reading from left to right.

Speaking and listening to the Japanese Language may be a bit tricky. The accent or pitch of a word will give it a different meaning as there are a number of Japanese words that sound and are spelled the same but mean different things. Then there too is the problem brought about by the existence of several dialects. One may get confused when learning the standard language and then later on encountering some variation of a dialect.

Grammar is not a problem. Unlike the English language which has a lot of rules and exceptions. The Japanese Language uses almost a single sentence template that you only need to fill out with the necessary details. The subject and object of a sentence is at the start while verbs are always in the end. Once you know the tenses and the basic rules, all you need is a dictionary and you can master the language on your own.
