Second Language Learning: Vocabulary and Grammar Tips To Become Fluent

April 06, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 119

Learning your first language on top of your native language can be a challenge, so we've put together an article on the best ways for you to learn a new spoken language. Personally, I am sickened every time I see someone who says that they are going to learn a new language and quit after a few days. Unfortunately, language learning can be hard if it is not practiced correctly and efficiently. Follow our tips to learn how to properly learn your next language.

  1. Learn the basic grammar first. While it may seem obvious to learn the basics of the grammar first, you'll need to have a good understanding of how to say what you're thinking, so you will be able to create internal dialog in your second language. This internal dialog is just what language learners strive to achieve.
  2. Learn a part of the language's vocabulary that interests you. If you're really interested in construction, learn all the words that have to do with construction, so you will be able to say what you want to be able to say
  3. Pick up new things in your new language that you didn't know alreadyIf you are really interested by construction, learn new construction techniques by reading articles in your new language.
  4. Rinse & repeat To learn new languages, you just have to stick with it. Keep learning new parts of the language. You'll find that after learning about construction you might then want to learn about shopping in that language.

Vocabulary Tricks

I know it--the vocabulary of your new language can be tricky. Here are a few tricks I've learned over the years for picking up the new vocabulary as quickly as possible.

  1. Word association Learn your new words by associating them with other words in the language. For example, if you know the word for "to play" in Spanish (jugar), you can connect the idea that "player" is "jugador(a)". This not only helps you remember, but it also creates logic in your mind with the new language. This logic will help you to guess your way to words you do not yet know.
  2. Acronyms While not always ideal for fluency (just talking conversationally), acronyms are proven to be effective in helping to remember. The parts of the acronym will stay fresh in memory.
  3. Stories They may seem silly, but being able to tell and re-tell a story from memory will allow you to recall the words from memory. This is one that you'll just have to try out and see that it works. Try telling a story about the new material you've been learning.

Perhaps the best strategy of all of these is to simply stick with it. Ideally, you'll be mixing and matching the strategies contained here to have the easiest learning experience with the language. Best of luck!
