Quick Tips to Improve IELTS Reading

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 177

Reading is one of the most frequent activities in colleges/universities. More and more books are required for a student to study higher. However, it is not always possible for almost all of the students to buy all the necessary books to read. In this context, other resources such as libraries are utilised. Because every library has a time constraint for borrowing and returning books, students are required to master how to read books quickly in order to be successful in their chosen fields. As a result, reading module is included in IELTS in order to assess these reading and comprehending skills of a candidate.

It's not surprising that the reading test tends to be considered by many to be the toughest part in the IELTS test. There are some justifications for that. Firstly, there are 3 lengthy passages each with many paragraphs. Secondly, after reading the passages, you have to answer 40 challenging questions ( roughly 13 to 14 per section). The reading test is very different in that no extra time is given at the end so you have to write your answers in the answer sheet. Since you only have an hour to finish the test, time can be a major constraint.

Practice is the key to doing well in the reading test. Newspapers, magazines and books are good resources for you. Doing that improves your reading speed and thereby increasing your reading score. Besides that, do not underestimate the importance of having done several IELTS mock tests. The better you are aware of the structure of the IELTS reading module, the better you can manage your time during the IELTS exam.

Importantly, your understanding of the reading passages is not the main focus of the reading test. In other words, it does NOT test how well you have understood the passage. Rather, you will be examined on 2 skills called scanning and skimming.

By increasing your exposure to written language, your ability to efficiently handle vast amounts of information, along with your IELTS reading skills, will be developed, and you have taken one step closer to a higher grade on the IELTS reading module.

Next, there are many valuable online resources such as CNN, BCC who are reliable news broadcasters that you can study new vocabulary daily. You should study on a variety of topics because the topics presented in the IELTS reading module vary a lot, and the way you work on your IELTS reading skills should reflect that.

Thirty-minutes practicing reading should be done daily, this will certainly improve your reading speed. Moreover, each time you practice, you have to check your word count. Doing that, you can be aware of your improvement and capability in reading like how many words you can read in a minute. Besides that, analyze you comprehending skills by summarizing what you have read. Further, your chief objective is to read faster while improving comprehending skills hence use same type of reading material that provides consistency necessary for sensible practice.
