How to Make the English Language Easier For ESL Students

April 11, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 89

ESL students deserve to have better instructors. Many of the teachers are just coming out of colleges with short term practice teacher training sessions.

The only approach, they have to teaching is whatever the book will teach them. Most of these early teachers have a very short and unimaginative training and many fall short of being successful. On the average, each of those newly graduated teachers need at least 2 to 5 years of prep work before becoming outstanding.

It doesn't have to be that way with a better curriculum at the teacher colleges.

Now, that was the bad news, the great news is that not all teachers fall into this range. There are many dynamic teachers, but these teachers do not teach the normal book learning way.

They introduce new methods, techniques, approaches and ways to help the ESL student do better.

The instruction that is needed and is very much lacking in most classes is the direct method approach. Many instructors bark at this approach, however, they use it steadily each and every classroom day.

I personally enjoy teaching with the books closed. This works well in the lower levels, the higher levels have distinct approaches. In regards to teaching the lower levels, the direct method is so easy to use.. Many teachers try to open the textbook and use it as the primary tool. That is a bad approach. It will come back to haunt you in the end.

It is important that the students use and practice with things that they see on a regular basis.

Having them draw pictures of their apartment or house is magical. The students learn much when they have to discuss what is before them.

All this and more can be done without opening the textbook. Of course, you will eventually open the textbook, but why rush?

Teachers who have been teaching ESL for many years are set on doing things as usual. They do not join associations, nor do they practice imaginative techniques.

They are not open to doing well. Why should they do anything differently? They are protected by the unions and if they do an average job, they will be given the post again.

ESL students need programs that are progressive, dynamic and highly imaginative. There are many books and new technology that seems to be doing a good job, however, in order to provide good instruction, we need to go to the "old school approach."

That is when the attention is on good teaching methods and style, and attitude. Most teachers do not have the appetite to give that extra 100%.

They are lazy and need to give themselves a reevaluation.

ESL students need to be offered more accelerated learning practices. They need to get a great look at the American way and culture, and know how to become good citizens and how to be successful.
