How to Learn Japanese Effectively With Textbooks and Blogs

June 08, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 154

When it comes to learning Japanese, we have the textbooks and the wide variety of blogs online. Both seems to be a good learning material, but it felt somewhat lacking in either of these materials. The textbooks is boring but organized. The blogs are interesting but random. So which should I use to learn Japanese effectively? The answer to that is BOTH. In order to learn Japanese effectively, we have to use both textbooks and blogs. The trick here is the sequence.

At first we use the textbooks. Textbooks are well researched and edited material that had their points arranged in a way that could give you a good overall concept. This is where you start to build you basics. When we want to learn any language, we start with the basics. What are the basics? The grammatical rule. For example, in English language, we learn "I am, you are, he is, they are, etc". However, in Japanese, we learn "ha (wa), ga, wo, ni, no, etc". Needing to memorize these rules is what usually makes textbooks boring. Nevertheless, it is an impartial part of the learning process where we must master.

Now that I know all the grammatical rules, what is next? Once we are good with the basics, the rest is pretty much a matter of exposure. Knowing what it is from the textbooks does not mean that you know how to use it. It is pretty much like graduating from the university but still not knowing how to apply that knowledge. This is when we need to get experience and there is no better place to get experience than the real-life blogs that is written by various people in the society. Get your experience by learning how the same subject can be can be told in many ways. Learn from blogs and see how they express their action, feeling and perception. Isn`t this is what we usually express in life too? Try this, type "cherry blossom (or Sakura) + blog" in Google and you will find thousands of blogs telling their experience from their perspective in their very own words. Read through blogs that usually come with pictures. See how they use words to describe what they saw. Furthermore, blogs usually use simple everyday words and grammars to convey their message. This makes blog very practical. On top of that, the pictures, the story telling and the jokes simply makes reading a pleasure rather than pressure. No exams or quiz after that.

Study with textbooks and learn with blogs. Textbooks might be boring, but it is important that you learn the basics. Don`t let the boredom wear you down. Once you are good with the basics, jump to blogs and explore. Learn from blogs with fun. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun learning.
