How to Go About Learning a New Language

April 23, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 139

Whether you're doing it as a hobby or to make yourself more competitive, learning another language can be a great idea. But languages are complicated. When we learned English as children, we didn't set out with a goal. It just kind of happened. But there are language learning strategies that can guide you through how to learn another language.

Know Why You are Studying the Language

Again, languages are complicated. If you try to embrace all this complexity at once, you are going to get overloaded and stop. In order to manage this complexity, you need to start off focusing on just one piece of the language.

If you are learning the language for business, then focus on learning about business situations. If you want to enjoy foreign language media, then find an artist or tv show you like and focus on understanding that.

Getting good at one aspect of a language will provide you a manageable introduction to the language. It will also give you a solid base to build off of when you decide to get deeper into the language.

Find a Partner

Whether a native speaker or someone who is also learning learning, find a language partner. A language partner can give you on outlet to practice and improve your language. It also provides a social component to language learning, which makes the process more interesting.

Learning Strategies for the Long Term

To really master a tongue, you're going to have to chip away at it little by little over a long period of time. This means that one of the most parts of language success is making sure you don't get bored or tired of the language learning process.

Try to learn a new word every day, or read one newspaper article in your target language every day. Or make a point to sing a foreign song in the shower. Language learning takes a lot of work, but ironically, it is the small, lighthearted aspects of the process that will keep you engaged and allow you to stick it out.

Luckily, the Internet provides access to all sorts of great foreign language content. Find a twitter stream or a blogger that you like. Order a dubbed TV show on DVD. Find a meetup group for people who speak you target language.

How to Learn Another Language

If you want to learn another tongue, you've got to find a strategy that will allow you to learn a little bit everyday for a long time. You must focus on staying engaged and excited about the language. And you should strive to advance a little more every day.

All in all, it's going to take some experimentation to find the learning strategy that works best for you. But if you stick with it, little by little, you will have learned a new language in no time.

If you are interested in languages, find the best language to learn.

If you are truly adventurous, you may wonder what is the hardest language to learn?
