April 13, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 202

As you know, it may be difficult to find time to learn a whole new language. Often we find ourselves constantly busy with school, work, family or friends. These five free iPhone apps will help you learn new Russian words and practice your grammar on-the-go.

1) Russian Alphabet by Hamdouchi Interactive, LLC

This free app allows you to learn and practice Russian alphabet. Each letter is accompanied with an audio recording by a native Russian speaker that helps you practice your pronunciation.

If you would like to practice Russian alphabet, you will need to purchase an add-on that will give you access to the writing and testing features. Overall, this is a great little app for learning Russian alphabet.

2) Learn Russian Vocabulary by Innovative Language Learning, LLC

Here is another app that will help you learn new Russian words. Learn Russian Vocabulary - Free Gengo WordPower teaches you 1 word a day every day.

Here is how you can practice your pronunciation with this app: listen to an audio recording by a native Russian speaker as many times as you like, and then record your own pronunciation. Now, you can compare your pronunciation to the audio recordings. If you need more practice, you can always listen to the recordings again.

In Sentences and Phrases mode you can get familiar with various examples of how the word is used in a context that helps you to understand its meaning. You can also practice new words by using Flashcards mode or add them to the Word Bank and review them again later.

A word a day doesn't seem too much. But a word a day every day will add up to 365 words at the end of the year!

3) Russian Numbers by Erasmos Inc

There is a paid and a free version of this app. Free version allows you to practice numbers up to 42, and a paid version ($9.99 at iTunes Store) up to 1,000,000.

Start by listening to the pronunciation in the Speak mode, then practice numbers in the Read and Listen modes. You will see your scores in the little scoreboard that is displayed during each of the exercises.

All in all, this is a great app that helps you learn and practice Russian numbers. It's very intuitive and is easy to use.

4) SpeakEasy Russian Lite by Benjamin McDowell

Here is another free app that offers a good selection of the most common Russian words and phrases. SpeakEasy Russian - Free Travel Phrases is a phrasebook and is certainly a great choice for those traveling to a Russian-speaking country. The free version of the app offers 130 words and expressions, while the full version of the app includes up to 1,500 Russian words and expressions ($9.99 at the iTunes Store).

This is one of the most popular apps for the Russian learners on the market. It's simple and user friendly.

SpeakEasy Russian - Free Travel Phrases includes the following categories: Greetings, Basic Phrases, Railway Trains, Travel Essentials, Days, Numbers. You can click on each one of the categories to learn new words and expressions in Russian, or you can find a phrase or a word by using the search function.

5) Russian Flash Cards by Declan Software

This iPhone app will help you to rapidly improve your Russian vocabulary. Again, you will find that there is a free and a paid version of the Russain Flash Cards iPhone app. The free version only includes six WordFiles: Days of the Week, 10 Numbers, 15 Verbs, Ordinal Numbers, Colors and Months. The paid version includes up to 4,400 words and phrases (yes, 4,400!), and is also available at the iTunes Store for $14.99.

The best thing about this app is that it includes 4 different types of exercises for each set of words that help you practice speaking, writing, spelling and listening skills in Russian. The app also includes a search feature that you can use to find a specific word.

I certainly recommend these free apps for your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for all Russian language learners. You will find that apps are a great way to add some fun to your studies and learn Russian language on the move.
