Teak Patio Furniture and Other Sustainable Solutions

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 163

Being environmentally friendly is on everyone's mind these days. While it was once hip to be part of the consumable consumer culture where something that was two years old was a candidate for the dump, today's homeowner is increasingly concerned with the environment and the damage we're doing to it through pollution and waste.

It wasn't so long ago that our outdoor spaces were wastelands of waste. Exotic woods were used to create our outdoor furnishings, charcoal grills poured harmful gases into the sky and we toasted with reckless abandon to our success and our gas guzzling cars.

Teak patio furniture used to be in this mix. Harvested from the jungles of Asia and the Far East, teak was prized for its strength, durability and imperviousness to the elements, including water and infestations.

Certainly teak patio furniture was and still is prized for its gorgeous grain and magnificent beauty. Wait, still is? Isn't teak verboten in today's eco-friendly world?

The answer is no. Manufacturers got wise to the environment long ago. For years now, top manufacturers have purchased teak from managed, sustainable forests. If you're wondering if the manufacturer of your favorite teak patio furniture is one of them, just read the label, or if you're online, the information about the product. Harvesting this wood from sustainable forests is very fashionable these days. Not only does it make good use of our natural resources, but it is environmentally friendly too.

This is a good thing, of course. Because it's really hard to beat teak when it comes to outdoor furnishings. Not only is it beautiful, but it has secondary benefits for the environment in that it outlasts virtually every other material you could use for outdoor furnishings. Certainly it beats those plastic patio furnishings you find at discount houses. After a season or two, the harsh rays of the sun cause these chairs to become inflexible and even brittle. Eventually they fail, heading off for the dumpster then the landfill. Teak will last for years, if not decades, when properly cared for.

If you're really not fan of teak patio furniture but love the idea of sustainability, don't despair. You can purchase lovely furnishings that are made out of recycled and repurposed milk jugs and similar discarded containers. Using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, furniture designers have learned how to turn these materials into amazing outdoor furniture, which can be every bit as beautiful and durable as teak.

While you won't find these "polywood" chairs to be exact replicas of teak patio furniture, you will find that they have a beauty all their own, even displaying some lovely imprinted wood grain that make them look amazingly natural and at home in your yard.

If you think about it, there's really no better message to send to your guests than having sustainable, eco-friendly furnishings with your yard. Connecting with nature is one of the great joys of home ownership and making a statement that you care about the environment through your choice of furniture is not only chic, but very user friendly these days.

In fact, it's a great conversation starter at your next party. Guests will be curious about your lovely new furniture and being able to tell them about its sustainability and eco-friendly characteristics makes great small talk. This is particularly true if you're hosting a party for for your influential neighbors. Just be sure that you smile politely when they acknowledge your style out by the pool. Your guests will not only appreciate their approval, but the fact that you provided them with a lovely, comfortable place to sit and perhaps catch a few Zzzzs while others do their own thing.
