Is Your HOA Over Spending on Landscaping and Destroying the Abundance and Ambience of Life

April 26, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 297

Many people enjoy the concept of living within a homeowners Association, and using their collective funds to keep the neighborhood looking sharp, therefore keeping property values up, and making it a wonderful place to live. However, for every HOA success story, there are also stories of chaos and living behind a literal Iron Curtain. Yes, it happens, and if you doubt this all you need to do is bring up the topic with some of your friends. Okay so, let's talk about this for second shall we?

Not long ago, I was talking to a gentleman in our town who lives in a private gated community, as most of the communities in our area are enclosed. He noted that he was paying $550 per month for the landscape fees as part of his share. It's a beautiful community, and he lives on a golf course. Our area has over 120 golf courses, and it is definitely considered one of the premier resort golfing communities in the world. No, I'm not bragging, I'm just laying the groundwork for an interesting thought and philosophical conundrum.

He explained to me that his landscaping crew cut down the hedges, the vines, bushes, and trees almost down to the bare bones - literally cutting the flowers off the Bougainvillea, thus, destroying the pleasant colors and beauty. He noted that the hummingbirds had stop making nests in the bushes, and had stopped coming around because they were not protected with such aggressive landscaping. Because they raked all the leaves from under the bushes, there were no more lizards, or bugs so the road runner no longer came around.

Because the homeowners Association didn't want all the rabbits eating the flowers, they planted flowers which were poisonous to rabbits, and then the landscape crew cutting back the bushes ended up taking most all the flowers as well. He said there was nothing scurrying about, and no life around, no more abundance, no more energy, and although it was somewhat scenic, it was also dead. Now then, this gentleman was not an environmentalist by any means, but he did note the difference, and he didn't like it. As he was complaining, he was asking why he should pay $550 a month so is Homeowners Association could kill all life.

Indeed, I didn't have any answer for him, nor did I know what to say when he explained that they came around twice a month to kill all the bugs and insects with pesticides. The HOA insisted that all of this was necessary, and it was needed to keep everything in proper order. To me, it sounds like they had to kill everyone in the village to save the village from communism, but in the end he is still living in a communist compound, taxed to the hilt for landscape fees, and he no longer feels at home in his own community.

It is interesting that we can see parallels to the way our government is being run, and how often HOAs get out of hand. It's too bad really, but the same dynamics exist at the micro level, as they do at the macro level. Of course, his HOA experience living in that pristine community happened to decline slowly over time, and no one really noticed, until one day he looked out his window at the beautiful golf course, and noticed that everything was dead, but it pretended to look nice, and he was to accept this new life - he's quite upset. Is this foreshadowing of things to come? Please consider all this and think on it.
