How to Repair Wrought Iron

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 107

What do we know about wrought-irons? These well shaped-irons are known to be resistant to cracks and can withstand fatigue. The metal is tough, invulnerable, enduring, and lasting. In other words, this ductile metal is very durable. So, is there really a need to worry about repairs? Yes, there is a need for maintenance, preservation and eventually repairs. Even if it is highly known for strength and long life expectancy, these easy to mold metals' oxidize and produce that reddish-brown rust causing the material to decay. The rust begins to creep into the irons' surface when it is exposed to water and oxygen. Water causes an iron to rust. The rust is caused by other pollutants in the environment, like dust. The iron is even harmed by the salty perspiration of our skin that touches the metal. It is therefore, worthwhile to take good care of our wrought-iron properties before subjecting them to repairs.

Looking at the rusted metal at some corner of the house, we can only think of the junk shop and the scrap value therein. However, knowing how much we have invested to those molded-iron fixtures, and the delightful look it has brought to our indoors or outdoors; we will always be prompted to refurbish them. Proper renovation, cleaning, and repainting will make the wrought-iron last for a lifetime.

Here are some ways to repair the wrought-iron fixtures:

1. Check closely if the wrought-iron piece has cracks or splits. 2. Obtain the services of a professional welder for the repair of the fractures, breaks or split. 3. Take hold of the following:

• a heavy-duty fabric-your drop cloth • blue painter's tape • wire brush • sandpaper • green rust remover

Unlike the welding services that should require a skillful hand to do the repair, the next steps would entail just a slight effort to implement. It needs only a minimal amount of cash outlay since this is a do-it-yourself project. Besides, this could be the right time to make changes according to your heart's desire. It could be a change from a lighter color to a darker one, or vice versa.

4. Place the wrought-iron furniture on top of the heavy-duty fabric and examine at close range for loose paints or soon to peel-up paints. In addition, look for damp spots where rust might develop or has started to develop.

5. Smooth the surface of the wrought-iron piece with sand paper, giving special attention to the rough areas.

6. Using the wire brush, take off the peeling paints and rusty spots by scraping it. Apply the green rust remover to make certain no rust has been left out. The green rust remover will turn into a black powder when rust is still present. Rust left unattended will cause it to resurface or may even eat through the wrought-iron to total rot, if not removed.

7. Scrub off the remaining black powder to remove the final traces of rust.

8. Apply a rust proof primer to all surfaces and let dry.

9. Apply thin coats of paint as per instruction, enough to brighten the wrought-iron piece.

So simple are the steps given that each one of us is capable of doing. We all know the fact that wrought-iron stands up well to the elements and looks considerably attractive in the outdoors. With some hard work and buying some not so expensive tools this good-looking artifact can look gorgeous again the way it is when you first bought it.
