The Middle of Everywhere

April 12, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 132

"I don't want to live in the country; it's out in the middle of nowhere." How often do you hear this when someone mentions moving to rural central Texas land? This notion couldn't be further from the truth. A client recently put it this way: "Living in rural north central Texas is in the middle of everywhere". If you look at a map, you can see the truth in his statement. From just about anywhere in central Texas you can be in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in two hours, San Antonio in under three hours, Austin in two hours and Waco in one hour. It's a common misconception that if you live in the country you're isolated from civilization.

There are many fun things to do if you choose rural living, but every once in a while it's nice to make a road trip. If you're in the mood for a play or a concert Bass Hall in Fort Worth is right around the corner. When San Antonio's River Walk beckons, it's a beautiful drive there down the well-traveled Highway 281 - especially in the springtime when wildflowers blanket the rural central Texas landscape. Austin's Sixth Street always provides a fun getaway when you're in the mood for some nightlife, and countless museums and art galleries offer entertainment during the day. Lake Travis offers a variety of water sports. Waco is a very short drive if you need to plan a shopping trip to Sams or the mall. You can always visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame or attend a Baylor University sporting event. All of these cities and small towns in between offer something for everyone.

When you've had your little getaway and are ready for some peace and quiet you will be home in a relatively short time from any of these destinations. I've found that trips to the city are always invigorating and exciting - change is always fun. When I start to get in a rut and crave a change, these short jaunts fit the bill. When I've had my fun and am almost home to my Hamilton county ranch where the blacktop ends and my gate comes into view, I feel so grateful to be home and back to the solitude of the country. Having adjusted to this lifestyle I can't imagine ever living in the city again, but occasional visits to the city are rejuvenating when I know I can always come home after I've enjoyed what they have to offer and return to a more relaxed lifestyle. Don't feel like life is passing you by just because you choose to live in the country. When you're ready for a little action, all you have to do is hop in your truck and whatever you're looking for is just a short drive away.
