Tips For Resurfacing Your Countertop

April 16, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 157

Resurfacing your countertops is a much cheaper alternative to replacing them, and if you are a DIY enthusiast some countertops can be resurfaced with tools and materials found on most large DIY stores. If you have laminated countertops, resurfacing them at home involves replacing the top Formica layer, cleaning the glue and gluing a new laminate sheet on top of the plywood base. However, keep the following in mind:

Avoid cutting the laminate too small

The first step to resurface your laminate countertops is cutting the new layer of laminate to the right size. This is easier to do if you sketch the shape of your countertop base on the back of it. However, and in order to avoid issues when fitting the new surface, you should never cut it too close to the pattern. You can trim and file the borders after they are installed.

Don't go at it alone

Holding a laminate sheet covered in glue while trying to make it fit exactly on top of your old countertop is not easy, and doing it alone is a recipe for disaster. Laminate sheets can break if, for example, you bend it too much, wasting your money and forcing you to start again. Resurfacing your countertops with the help of a friend or family member is much easier. It will also allow you to avoid bubbles when gluing the two surfaces together.

Bubbles and Bumps are the enemy

There's nothing that scream "sloppy job" louder than a kitchen surface full of bubbles and bumps, and sadly enough laminate countertops are prone to them. Make sure the glue is spread generously but evenly all over the surfaces you intend to glue, and use a J-Roller to ensure there are no air bubbles as you glue the new surface to the base. Slow and steady does the job, trying to just push the two surfaces together and do a quick job usually doesn't work.

Cleaning Glue

It's almost inevitable to end up with some contact glue on your newly resurfaced countertop. To remove it you can use some lacquer thinner (just make sure you are working on a well-ventilated room, as it will smell). It's a corrosive substance that doesn't harm the plastic, but can make your eyes water and harm your skin, so wear globes when using it. Just soak a rag and slowly rub away the glue from the laminate surface.

While there is plenty of information online about resurfacing countertops, it's important to keep in mind that it's not such an easy job and requires planning and care. Like any DIY project it can be a bit messy, but if you are careful and take it slowly your Formica countertops will be as good as new in no time.
