Different Types of Tile Cutter

April 17, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 218

Tiling is a job that many people leave to the professionals. Not without good reason too as it is a highly skilled job. There is not a lot of point buying your lovely new tiles and then doing such a bad job of fitting them that it ruins the look and feel you had in mind for your bathroom or kitchen project. So if hiring a professional just doesn't make it into your budget, then it's a good idea to make sure you have the right tools to do the job properly yourself. One of the most important tools is the tile cutter.

Tile cutters come in various shapes and sizes and the type of tile you have bought largely helps to decide which cutter you need. Obviously the professionals invest in some very expensive tools that do a very accurate job of cutting and can cut through any style of tile but what do us mere DIYers use to get the job done. We have outlined few options below.

1) Electrical Wet Saw

This is a very good type of cutter for those who have a complicated tile job on your hands with lots of cuts. Particularly when you need to make cuts out of a corner of the tile. It helps make straight cuts and with the use of the built in guide it can be very accurate. You need to make sure the correct cutting wheel is fitted for the type of tile you are using. One down side is the mess it creates and also you need to be very careful to not get bits of tile in your eyes so wear safety goggles. Bigger tiles are a bit tricky with the wet saw too as the cutting surface is relatively small.

They fall in the mid price range and can be a good investment if you are doing a number of tiling jobs at home.

2) Bench or Bridge Saws

Bench saws are very expensive and would be mostly used by the serious professional. They come with all the bells and whistles to allow you to do a quick but accurate job of tiling. They can cut a large range of tiles including the bigger ones that the wet saws find hard to handle. Again, its only worth investing in this if you do a lot of jobs or the best option is to hire one from the tool hire centre.

3) Manual Cutters

The manual cutter is the most popular as most amateur tillers could use them and they are often cheaper. However, there are some that are more expensive and some professional tillers prefer to use them, but you can pick them up under £20. These allow you to create a scribe across the top of the tile and them you can break the tile with their built in snap off functionality. The problem with manual cutters is that it would be difficult to cut a section out of the tile like a corner but instead you would need to cut across the entire length of the tile.

4) Scribe and Nippers

The last option is to use a tile scribe and nippers. This allows you to manually score the tile and then break over a block of wood or something like that. The nippers allow you to take smaller pieces out of the tile. These are cheap and for small tiling jobs where you only have a few tiles to fit.

As with all tiling jobs make sure you plan it out, get the right tools for the job and be safe with gloves and goggles etc.

Good luck with your tiling job.
