5 Questions You Should Ask Before Installing Granite Counters

February 28, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 238

Granite countertops continue to be highly desirable surfaces for kitchens and bathrooms. This natural stone provides a major upgrade to homes that have laminate and other basic counter surfaces. Part of the reason for the ongoing popularity of granite is that the quality to cost ratio is much better than other solid surface countertops.

There are a number of decisions to make when having granite countertops installed. There are multiple options for sinks, different edges to choose from, and so on. The single most important choice you will make is deciding on the contractor that will complete the fabrication and installation. Here are 5 questions that you must ask before choosing a contractor.

Is the Fabricator/Installer fully insured?

Some contractors will avoid the expense of liability insurance. General liability insurance protects you and your home from any accidents or damages that may occur while the installers are on your property. Without liability insurance, any damages or even injuries to one of the workers would become your liability and could cost you thousands of dollars in repair costs or even medical and legal fees.

Who will be in your home?

It is your right to know who is coming into your home. Find a contractor that does background checks and drug testing on all of their employees. Some contractors use labor on a short term basis and they may not have even known these individuals for more than a few days.

Does the contractor provide references and testimonials?

A well established company will always have references. Contractors that do quality work are happy to let you speak with other customers since they are generally going to brag on the fine work this contractor did for them. A great reference is a wonderful sales tool, while unavailable references are always suspicious.

Are templates done digitally?

While there are skilled template makers out there, none are as accurate as a computerized digital template. The previous methods of paper or wood strips leave room for error. Only a digital template can guarantee a perfect fit on the day of installation.

Is the fabricator a member of the Marble Institute of America (MIA)?

The MIA is the authoritative association in the marble and stone industry. They provide industry education and credibility to their members. If a contractor is not only a member, but accredited by the MIA as well, this is a rarity and the sign of a great contractor.
