What NOT To Wear To The Job Interview

April 25, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 209

Job interviews are not the place to make a fashion statement. You must put forward a professional image to be taken seriously and what you choose to wear (and NOT wear) is critical for a job interview.

What you wear is judged by your interviewers and can either help your chances of moving forward or hurt your chances in the long run.

Here is a quick recap pf what you should never wear to an interview.

No casual clothing

Even if the dress code is casual, you should never wear casual clothing, tight fitting or revealing clothing. Absolutely no jeans, even on a casual Friday and even if your interviewer will be dressed down.

You should never wear T-shirts, sweatshirts, sandals, flip flops, running shoes. No shorts, no tank tops and no baseball caps or hats. Casual wear is never appropriate for interviews.

Many employers have "dress down" days, when wearing casual clothing is acceptable. There is only one exception to this rule - when the interviewers specifically ask you to dress this way. Otherwise, don't even think about it.

Minimal jewelry

Always wear minimum jewelry. Certainly nothing flashy and nothing really expensive and distracting. If you can hear it, leave it at home. That goes for earrings, bracelets, necklaces and watches.

Remove visible piercings other than one set of earrings (only for the ladies) and cover up any visible tattoos. Unless it's a tattoo of the company logo, you do not want to draw any attention to it. Not until you have a job offer anyway.

Minimize piercings and tattoos

There's nothing wrong with any of these, even in an interview. It's very possible that the person interviewing may have their own piercing and tattoos.

However, the job interview is a risky place to make any kind of personal style statements. Especially when you have no idea who you are meeting. The best policy is always to be on the safe side.

Your goal is to stand out and get noticed but not for the wrong reasons. When it comes to your personal style, you always want to follow basic rules and guidelines. Don't take any chances in the job interview that could risk your job offer.

The bottom line is this. Nothing but your knowledge, skills and abilities should be a conversation piece. The key is to focus all attention on your abilities and why you and only you are the best person for the job.
