Job Interview Questions - How To Overcome The "Underqualified" Question

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 151

Job interview questions like "do you think you are under qualified for this position?" is an opportunity for you to discuss their major concerns with your work experience and still show them why you are a perfect fit for the job.

You already knew when you applied that you were probably a little junior for the role, but since you got called for the job interview, they clearly believe you have the potential to do the job and it's up to you to prove they are right.

To answer this job interview question takes some skill and strategy. But when handled properly, you could position yourself as the front runner for the job and be a serious contender, even to those who have more experience, skills and knowledge than you do.

First, you need to address this interview question directly and admit the areas in your work experience that fall short to what they are expecting. You should position your answer in a more positive light. For example "well, looking at the requirements of the job, it may appear that on paper, I don't have all the skills for the job but..."

Next, you want to provide the counter argument to why you are still the best person for the job and why you can still deliver results even though you don't have all the necessary skills, knowledge and experience.

For example, "I have always been a fast learner and in my last job, I was up and running in less than 30 days with minimal training...".

You should be able to show them that although you don't have the knowledge today, you are willing to do the work to acquire the skills, get the training and shorten your learning curve so you can deliver results quickly.

Finally, show them how it's a bargain to hire you over your competitors since you are eager and motivated but you are also willing to accept a little less than the others initially because you are still in a learning curve.

Many employers will be willing to hire you at a lower salary initially so you can prove yourself and revisit your salary in a few months after they have had a chance to assess your performance.

Job interview questions like this allow you to show you are talented, keen and motivated and you are willing to do what it takes to step into the role and exceed their expectations.
