Job Interview Questions - How To Answer Them

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 113

Job interview questions like "do you think you are overqualified?" can be tricky for most professionals to answer. Clearly, they are asking because "they" think you are overqualified and this may be a problem in the interview.

So, what's the big problem with being overqualified? You have the skills, the knowledge and the expertise. You can do the job and do it really well. Doesn't every Hiring Manager want that?

Well, it depends. The key here is to first understand their concerns and then use these strategies I am about to teach you to address each objection and alleviate any reason to hiring you. When the interviewer brings up this question in the job interview, it's for a number of reasons.

First, they may be worried that they can't afford you. Of course, with so much experience, you may be demanding more money than they are willing to pay.

Second, if your skills and experience exceed what they need for the job, there is a chance you will leave as soon as another job comes along that is a better match for your qualifications, skills and experience. So, they are also worried about keeping you.

So what can you do about this? Try these tips.

Number 1 - Admit that you are probably overqualified. It doesn't help you to pretend as if you are not. Clearly state where your experience, skills and knowledge do exceed their expectations.

Number 2 - Address their concerns directly. For example, "you may be worried that because of my experience, my salary expectations exceed what you are offering but in fact, this job meets my salary expectations for what is required of me... ".

Another example is "I have had several jobs in the past that were more challenging and stressful and I have found that the responsibilities of this job are better aligned to what I want to do at this stage in my life..."

Number 3 - List all the reasons why being overqualified for the job actually works in their favor. For example, "I can hit the ground running quickly with very little training...", or "I can deliver results almost immediately and be super productive because I know what to do" and of course, "I am willing to help out in other areas and coach other junior team members and share my knowledge, skills and experience..."

Job interview questions like these are the perfect opportunity to build a strong case for why hiring you for the job makes perfect sense, even if you have more qualifications than they need.

You simply have to demonstrate why you are the right person for the job using simple job interview strategies like these.
