Job Interview Questions and Answers - Why Do You Want To Leave Your Job?

April 10, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 238

Job interview questions seek to uncover any issues that your Hiring Manager may encounter with you if you are hired. Now, of course, they are going to ask you why you want to leave your current job or why you left your last job.

Job interview questions like these should be expected because they need to understand what it is you are looking for in your next job and if they can meet your expectations. There are also a number of reasons why you might have left your job or why you want to leave that may be red flags for them.

You always want to be honest in the interview not only because it's the right thing to do but also because lying will usually backfire somewhere down the line. And it's not worth it.

The key to answering this question is to ensure you have a solid answer that is not negative in any way and also positions you as motivated, eager and ready to work.

The truth is unless they are laid off or fired, most people move on because they are unhappy with the work they are doing, the money they are making or the people they work with. If you are making the decision to leave your current job or you quit your last job, chances are it was because of one of these three reasons.

Now, it's okay to want to change jobs because of the boss you don't like, the coworkers you don't like or the fact that you are under appreciated. The only thing is, the job interview is not the place to share your grievances.

Leave this conversation for Friday night with your closest friends and focus on the mission ahead of you...getting hired in the job interview.

What you need to do is create a positive spin on this interview question. The only way to do that is not focus on the negative (what you dislike about your present job or last job) and instead focus your answer on the positive (what you do like about the job you are interviewing for).

For example, "I'm really looking for an opportunity to expand my skills and take on more responsibility..." instead of "My boss won't promote me or let me take training courses to improve..."

Here's another example. "I am looking for an opportunity to be creative..." instead of "I'm bored out of my mind..."

See how that works? The key is to be strategic about how you answer job interview questions.
