Job Interview Questions and Answers - How To Discuss Your Career Goals

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 180

Job interview questions around your career goals are designed to get a sense of what you are looking for in your future positions and where you are planning to take your career.

You see, the Hiring Managers are hiring you for a job today, but they are also trying to assess your skills and motivation in the job interview for other jobs in the company down the line. Ideally, once they have trained you, it is in their best interest to keep you as long as they possibly can, provided you continue to deliver results and are productive.

The secret to this interview question is to show how you are a fit for the current position you are interviewing for but motivated and open to the possibilities and potential opportunities the company may offer down the line.

In today's economy, it isn't realistic to expect an employee to stay in the same job or company for the long term and the employer also can't guarantee that your job is safe and secure for the long run.

This job interview question can come in the form of "what do you see yourself 5 years from now" or "describe your short term and long term goals".

First, be sure to have a list of your short term career goals in the context of the job you are interviewing for. For example, if the job is for a Manager, Customer Service position, you ideally want to discuss what your goals would be in this position.

Show them that you are already thinking about what you can accomplish in this job if you got hired by saying "if I got hired for this job, my short term goal would be to reduce the number of customer complaints by 50% and..."

Second, discuss your long term goals in the context of what you can do for the company in the long term or in other words, in 5 - 10 years. Be honest about what you really want.

If it's a promotion down the line, then let them know you plan on developing the skills and knowledge to move up some day. If you want to stay right where you are, let them know what your plans are and assure them that you will stay with them for the long haul.

Finally, keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer to this job interview question. There is only your sincere answer. However, the strategic way to answer this job interview question, is to keep it relevant to them.
