Job Interview Questions and Answers - 3 Steps To Answer "Describe Your Ideal Job"

April 09, 2012 | Comments: 0 | Views: 260

Job interview questions that ask you to "describe your ideal job" or to "tell me what your perfect job would be" is an opportunity for you to show the Hiring Managers that the job you have applied for and are interviewing for is the right fit for you.

Now the easy way to do this would be simply to describe the exact job you are interviewing for. This won't work and most job seekers make this mistake. The interviewer is smarter than that. You can't simply memorize the job description and regurgitate back to them what they are offering as your "ideal" job. This will only make you look shallow in the job interview.

Instead, you have to use the job interview to provide an answer to this question that shows that you have a deep understanding of what your key strengths are and you have given some thought to what type of job is best suited for you.

Here are three steps you can take to make sure you answer this interview question with ease and clarity:

Step 1 - Of course, start off by understanding exactly what type of job you are interviewing for. You should know the job description inside and out. You should know the job responsibilities, the key requirements, what is expected of you and what you need to do to excel in this role.

Step 2 - Make a list of what you actually enjoy doing. Think back to all your previous jobs and write down what you liked most about each job. You should note if you enjoy flexibility, working alone or in a team, a structured environment or non-structured environment, if you like it fast-paced or slower, if you like working with customers, if you like working with data etc. You need to take real inventory of what you have liked in your past jobs.

Step 3 - Put both lists side by side and match 3-5 characteristics. Then in the interview, when you say your ideal job is a job that offers you the ability to lead a team, you can follow up with an example from a previous job where you actually led a team, enjoyed it and were successful at it.

Job interview questions must be approached strategically. Once you go through these steps, you will be able to provide a clear and concise answer in the interview that is not only a legitimate match to what they are offering but is also honest and sincere.

The interviewers are trained to listen for genuine and sincere answers and the best way for you to deliver a powerful answer to any job interview question is to take the time and develop an answer that is uniquely your own.
